Braga vs. Sporting Lisbon – News and Probable Lineups

As the top four teams clash this matchday, Sporting Lisbon could be the key benefactor when they head to Minho to challenge Braga on Saturday.

Currently sitting second, the Lions have an opportunity to narrow the four-point distance to the top of the Primeira Liga, with leaders Porto facing third-place Benfica the following day, while the Archbishops aim to solidify their hold on fourth place.

Match overview

In pursuit of replicating their league and cup success from the previous season, Sporting took charge of their Taca de Portugal semi-final against Porto by securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg on Tuesday, thanks to a decisive penalty from Luis Suarez in the 62nd minute.

This outcome has left Rui Borges’s team unbeaten in 11 matches across all tournaments since their Taca da Liga exit in January, winning 10 of them, including their last four while keeping clean sheets in three of those, with the latter half happening in the league.

Sporting’s last Primeira Liga match was a resounding 3-0 victory over Estoril Praia last Friday, where Suarez scored two early goals, and Daniel Braganca added another in stoppage time to secure full points, thus preserving Sporting’s flawless record against teams outside the top five.

Throughout the season, all of Sporting’s 19 wins from 24 league matches (D4, L1) have come against such teams, indicating that victories have been scarce against higher-ranked opponents, including a 1-1 draw with Braga in their previous matchup.

Although the Lions have struggled in their past two encounters with the Archbishops without a win, they did emerge victorious the last time they visited Minho, which should encourage a side that has recorded nine wins in 12 away league fixtures (D3) this season.

Braga poses as a formidable contender, having secured seven victories from their last nine matches (D1, L1) since encountering back-to-back defeats in the Taca da Liga and the Portuguese Cup, which also granted Carlos Vicens’s team a direct slot into the Europa League Round of 16.

The Archbishops recently triumphed with a 2-1 win over Nacional, where Rodrigo Zalazar scored his second goal in the dying moments, securing his side’s sixth victory in seven league outings (L1).

Braga has garnered more points than only Sporting (19) and Benfica (19) in the same period, currently residing fourth in the Primeira Liga table, five points ahead of fifth-place Gil Vicente, and a win could extend that lead to eight points—if only temporarily—until the Roosters play the next day.

The hosts will enter this clash with plenty of optimism, having secured six wins in their last seven home league contests (D1), including three consecutive matches where they scored three or more goals.

Team News

However, last weekend’s win over Nacional came at a price for Braga, as defender Adrian Leon Barisic had to exit the match and is now sidelined with an abductor injury.

On the other hand, Amine El Ouazzani remains unavailable due to a foot issue, while Jean-Baptiste Gorby and Sikou Niakite continue to be absent due to muscle injuries, and Vitor Carvalho could miss a sixth consecutive match.

Zalazar is in superb form, having scored braces in his last two games, and will approach this match brimming with confidence, alongside captain Ricardo Horta, who has been recognized as the February Player of the Month by the union.

Sporting’s Suarez is also in great shape, finding the net in each of his last four appearances, placing him in a strong position for the Golden Boot chase with 22 league goals to his name thus far.

In terms of injuries, the Lions are likely to continue missing Ricardo Mangas, Giorgi Kochorashvili, and Geovany Quenda, while Zeno Debast and Fotis Ioannidis have returned to training this week, though it remains uncertain if they will be fit to play.

Braga probable starting XI:

Hornicek; Lagerbielke, Arrey-Mbi, Oliveira; Gomez, Moutinho, Grillitsch, G Martinez; Horta, P Victor, Zalazar

Sporting Lisbon probable starting XI:

Silva; Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo; Hjulmand, Morita; Catamo, Trincao, Guilherme; Suarez

As both teams approach this fixture with strong momentum, it promises to be a well-matched battle, and a scoring draw seems like a plausible outcome given that both sides are in good attacking form.

Braga’s last dropped points occurred in a 2-2 draw against Benfica, and considering Sporting’s own challenges in sealing victories against top-five teams, a similar result could be expected here.
