Lazio vs Pisa – News and Probable Lineups

Concluding another frustrating campaign, Lazio will host Pisa in their last Serie A fixture of the 2025-26 season at Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

While Lazio find themselves in the middle of the table and have recently been defeated in the Coppa Italia final, their opponents from Tuscany are heading back down to Italy’s second tier.

Match overview

The season for Lazio has been quite disappointing, with the possibility of slipping out of the top half of the standings looming, as Udinese and Sassuolo are trailing them ahead of the final matchday.

Set to miss European competition for the second consecutive year, internal strife within the club and among fans has turned home matches into a challenging experience.

Indeed, Lazio’s latest two defeats have come on home soil – first against Inter de Milão in the cup final, followed by a loss to their intense city rivals, Roma.

Just days after witnessing Inter celebrate their Coppa Italia victory at Stadio Olimpico, Maurizio Sarri’s squad fell 2-0 in the Derby della Capitale.

Conceding a goal from a header on either side of halftime left them with little hope of regaining control in what was typically a heated encounter, marking their failure to score in 17 league matches this season – the worst record for the club this century.

Following three consecutive defeats with an aggregate scoring of 7-0, Lazio will not finish higher than ninth place – it’s been 12 years since they were so low in the table.

Significantly, Sarri’s team even struggled to overcome the lowly Pisa in their previous meeting, resulting in a 0-0 draw at Cetilar Arena back in October.

At the bottom of the table, Pisa is set for their last top-flight match before making a return to Serie B.

Having never challenged to maintain their place in the league – after a three-decade absence from Italy’s top division – the Tuscan club seems to be exiting with a whimper.

The Nerazzurri have suffered defeats in their last eight matches, conceding a total of 20 goals, and last week’s 3-0 loss at home to Napoli has left them with just 18 points from 37 encounters.

Managing to secure only four points since early February, Pisa holds the worst record among Europe’s top five leagues during that period.

It’s fair to say that Oscar Hiljemark’s mid-season appointment hasn’t yielded positive results, raising questions about his ability to lead the promotion bid in the coming season.

Team News

With Lazio’s goalkeepers Ivan Provedel and Edoardo Motta sidelined due to injuries, third-string Alessio Furlanetto will need to step in once more, having just made his debut in the derby.

Moreover, Nicolo Rovella will be unavailable due to suspension following his red card against Roma, while usual starters Kenneth Taylor and Nuno Tavares are also out.

Both Patric and team captain Mattia Zaccagni will undergo fitness tests, and the lone bright spot for Sarri is the return of crucial defender Alessio Romagnoli from suspension.

With Taty Castellanos not adequately replaced since his departure from Lazio in January, any of Tijjani Noslin, Daniel Maldini, Boulaye Dia, or Petar Ratkov could feature in the attacking lineup.

Veteran forward Pedro is anticipated to make his final appearance for the club and might take on a false nine role; his teammate Gustav Isaksen is Lazio’s leading scorer with a modest five league goals.

On the other hand, Mehdi Leris and Matteo Tramoni are the only players for Pisa to achieve multiple goals and assists; Stefano Moreo stands as their top scorer in Serie A with six.

While Rosen Bozhinov and Felipe Loyola are set to return from suspension, Antonio Caracciolo is now on the sidelines for disciplinary reasons, having received his tenth yellow card this season.

Françasco Coppola and Daniel Denoon remain unavailable due to injuries, while Tramoni has been grappling with a muscular issue.

Lazio probable starting XI:

Furlanetto; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Pellegrini; Basic, Cataldi, Dele-Bashiru; Isaksen, Dia, Pedro

Pisa probable starting XI:

Semper; Bozhinov, Canestrelli, Calabresi; Leris, Hojolt, Aebischer, Akinsanmiro, Angori; Stojilkovic, Moreo

Even amidst a fan boycott and a troubling streak of results, Lazio should be able to overcome last-placed Pisa, who have never appeared capable of surviving in their first season back in the top flight after 34 years.

The hosts may also be bidding farewell to their struggling head coach, so they will be eager to provide Sarri with a proper send-off.
