Kairat xOmonia - prediction, team news, lineups

Kairat must deliver a strong showing to maintain their UEFA Champions League aspirations when they take on Omonia at Central Stadium in Almaty on Wednesday for the second leg of their qualifying-round tie.

The Kazakh side qualified for the league stage of the Champions League last season but now faces the possibility of elimination this time after registering a 1-0 loss in the initial leg.

Match overview

Following their triumph in the 2025-26 Kazakh league, Kairat initiated their European qualification campaign with a solid performance, defeating Sutjeska 4-1 on aggregate in the prior round.

Rafael Urazbakhtin’s team finished 36th in the Champions League standings, failing to secure victory in any of their eight matches.

They have had an impressive start domestically this season, currently leading the Kazakh league with 45 points from 20 matches, two points ahead of Ordabasy, who have played one match less.

Their home performance has been particularly promising, as Kairat remains unbeaten in their last nine encounters at Central Stadium, securing six wins, and will aim to leverage this advantage in European competition.

Kairat has also recorded six consecutive league victories and encountered only one defeat in their last 10 matches across all competitions, although there is still room for improvement defensively, having not kept a clean sheet in their last three outings.

Omonia are the current champions of Cyprus after winning the league title last season, finishing 18 points ahead of second-place AEK Larnaca.

They have made their return to the Champions League after a significant hiatus, having last participated in the tournament in 2021, when they were ousted by Dinamo Zagreb during the playoff stage.

Last season, Omonia placed 18th in the Conference League group stage before their European journey concluded with a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Rijeka in the knockout phase.

Omonia brings a slim advantage into the second leg and can feel confident about securing progress, having remained unbeaten in their last five games, which include four pre-season friendly matches.

Team News

The visitors will be without Loic Nego, who received a red card in the first leg and is suspended for this match.

Omonia also has several key players unavailable due to injury, including left-back Fotis Kitsos and right-back Moses Odubajo.

Kairat, on the other hand, have lost 17-year-old forward Dastan Satpayev to Chelsea this summer, creating a noticeable gap in their attacking roster.

Henning Berg is expected to maintain a lineup similar to the one that narrowly lost 1-0 in the first leg.

Kairat probable starting XI:

Anarbekov; Mata, Africo, Martynovich, Tapalov; Oksanen, Sadybekov; Jukkola, Joginho, Mrynskiy; gual

Omonia probable starting XI:

Fabiano? Pepis, Coulibaly, Panagiotou, Balkovec? Maric, Tankovic, Andreou; Costa, Kakoullis, Montnor

Omonia holds a narrow lead from the first leg, but Kairat is likely to pose a significantly stronger attacking threat at home as they aim to overcome the deficit.

The visitors are hindered by the absence of two defenders due to injuries, and Nego’s suspension further limits their options; thus, we anticipate Kairat will utilize their home advantage effectively to secure progression to the next round.
