Tottenham vs Everton – News and Probable Lineups
In one of two major final-day fixtures in the Premier League set to unfold in the capital, Tottenham Hotspur concludes their battle for survival by hosting Everton on Sunday afternoon.
The Lilywhites had an opportunity to secure their top-flight status midweek but failed to do so. However, with a two-point cushion and a better goal difference over West Ham United, a draw in this encounter should be enough to ensure they stay in the Premier League.
Match overview
Tottenham, described as “embarrassing” by a frustrated James Maddison, could still be facing trips to Lincoln City in the 2026-27 season due to missing a prime chance to clinch Premier League survival with a match to spare during the week.
Led by Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham faced a fatigued Chelsea side still reeling from their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City. The hosts conceded goals to Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos, though Richarlison’s goal gave them a glimmer of hope amidst controversy surrounding a penalty decision.
Marc Cucurella fouled Micky van de Ven in the box and received a yellow card, yet since the ball was out of play at that time, a penalty was not awarded, igniting familiar outrage among Tottenham fans reminiscent of the Maddison-Leeds United incident.
Tottenham can take solace in knowing their future is in their own hands this weekend; the only scenario that could see them relegated would involve a loss and a West Ham win over Leeds United, or a draw for the Lilywhites along with a Hammers victory by 12 or more goals—a rather far-fetched scenario.
However, De Zerbi’s men may prefer to finish their season away from their troubled home ground, as they have managed to secure a meager 12 points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, which is tied for the lowest total in the league alongside Burnley.
Everton should not hold any reservations about concluding their somewhat inconsistent campaign away from home, having achieved 26 of their 49 points on opposing turf in the 2025-26 season; this tally matches that of Tottenham and is only lower than that of Arsenal and Manchester City.
In contrast, the Hill Dickinson Stadium has yet to evoke a sense of fear for visiting teams, as David Moyes’s squad suffered their eighth home defeat of the Premier League campaign last weekend, letting slip a 1-0 advantage in a 3-1 loss to Sunderland.
The 12th-placed Toffees can no longer sneak into European contention on the final matchday, but Moyes can at least contribute to assisting his former team, West Ham, in avoiding relegation after being defeated by another former club in gameweek 37.
Nonetheless, Everton is languishing rather than thriving as the season concludes, failing to win in their last six Premier League matches, having allowed at least two goals in each outing—though they have managed to score in each match as well.
Earlier this season, the Toffees struggled in a 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham, and they have lost their last four away encounters against the Lilywhites, shipping a total of 13 goals to just one in return, with their most recent defeat being a 4-0 drubbing in August 2024.
Team News
Tottenham’s quest for survival may be bolstered by the return of Dominic Solanke, who has fully recovered from a hamstring injury, though his inclusion in the squad is still uncertain.
Richarlison could retain his position in the attack after netting his 11th goal of the Premier League season last time out; he also requires just one more goal involvement to match his best output in a top-flight campaign (16).
Ben Davies (ankle) and Mohammed Kudus (thigh) remain sidelined alongside knee injuries affecting Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons, and Cristian Romero, the latter of whom has angered Tottenham supporters by returning to Argentina instead of attending the crucial clash in person on Sunday.
As for Everton, what was anticipated to be a “minor” injury for Idrissa Gueye has kept the 36-year-old out for nearly a month, and he remains a doubt for Sunday as he has yet to resume training with the team.
Jarrad Branthwaite (hamstring) and Jack Grealish (foot) will not participate any further this season, and it remains to be seen if Everton can reach an agreement with Manchester City regarding a permanent deal for Grealish.
Moyes has emphasized that he will not be fielding a second-string lineup on Sunday, and a similar starting XI to that which played against Sunderland can be anticipated, given that Everton only collapsed in the final 10 minutes of that match.
Tottenham Hotspur probable starting XI:
Kinski; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Palhinha; Kolo Muani, Gallagher, Tel; Richarlison
Everton probable starting XI:
Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko; Garner, Iroegbunam; Rohl, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye; Beto
Tottenham may find chances in attack against an Everton side that has conceded two or more goals in each of their last five away fixtures, with only a top-half finish left to play for.
Backing Tottenham to win at home this season has proven difficult, yet there is hope for De Zerbi’s squad to secure the point needed to extend their tenure in the Premier League.
