The defending Europa League champions, Aston Villa, are set to travel to the Amex Stadium for their opening match of the 2026-27 Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Last year’s encounter at this venue turned into a thrilling seven-goal contest, with Ollie Watkins netting a brace that propelled Villa to a 4-3 victory away from home.
Match overview
Brighton prepares for its tenth consecutive season in the Premier League and has achieved back-to-back finishes in eighth position under the guidance of head coach Fabian Hurzeler, earning a spot in the Conference League playoff as a result of last season’s efforts.
The Seagulls come into this domestic opener with little recovery time, having traveled 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle for a goalless draw against Norwegian club Tromso in a first-leg clash on Thursday, where they managed to get just six of their 25 attempts on target.
Before that match, Brighton enjoyed a successful pre-season, winning all four of their friendly matches against Wycombe, Strasbourg, Roma, and Bologna, netting 12 goals in the process.
However, they did suffer defeat in their last two Premier League games of the previous season (1-0 to Leeds and 3-0 to Manchester United), and they have not endured three consecutive losses in the league since March 2022 under former manager Graham Potter, where they had a six-match streak that included a home defeat to Aston Villa.
Since their opening day loss to Chelsea on the first weekend of the 2020-21 season, Brighton has remained unbeaten in their last five opening fixtures in the Premier League (W4 D1), marking their longest unbeaten streak since managing ten straight seasons without defeat between 1969-70 and 1978-79.
Nevertheless, Brighton’s recent performance against Villa has been less than impressive, losing 64% of their top-flight encounters with the Lions (nine out of 14 – W2 D3), and they have also conceded more points from winning positions against this Midlands club than any other Premier League team (13).
Aston Villa has positioned itself as a consistent member of the upper echelons of English football in recent seasons. Unai Emery has skillfully guided the club back to Europe’s elite, qualifying for the Champions League last season with a commendable fourth-place finish for the second time in three years.
After triumphing over Freiburg with a 3-0 scoreline in the Europa League final in May, Villa had a mixed pre-season schedule, winning three and losing four of their seven friendly matches, as well as facing a narrow 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup just over a week ago.
Emery has also navigated the challenges of losing several key players during the summer, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, and Lucas Digne. However, Villa has capitalized on the funds from these departures to bring in seven new signings, with more expected before the September 1 deadline.
The Midlands outfit enters Sunday’s match eager to improve their record on the opening weekend of the Premier League, having only secured two wins in seven attempts since their return to the top flight in 2019-20 (D1 L4).
On the plus side, Villa can draw confidence from their recent history against Brighton, having won eight of their last ten Premier League clashes with the Seagulls (D1 L1), and they have yet to lose in any of their four top-flight encounters with Hurzeler’s team (W3 D1), scoring ten goals in those fixtures.
Team News
Brighton will be missing Yankuba Minteh (leg), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee), and Evan Ferguson (ankle) due to injuries. Carlos Baleba, also sidelined with an ankle problem, is on the brink of moving to Manchester United for a fee exceeding £65m.
The club’s record signing, Luka Vuskovic, played the full 90 minutes against Tromso on Thursday alongside Pascal Gross, Yasin Ayari, Matz Wieffer, and Olivier Boscagli. All five are expected to feature again on Sunday, although their game time might be managed this time around.
If Gross drops back into a deeper midfield role, it could enable Jack Hinshelwood to return to the number 10 position, where he found the back of the net three times in Brighton’s last five league matches last season.
Canadian forward Promise David joined the club earlier this week and is ready to make his debut, while Georginio Rutter is slated to lead the attack.
For Aston Villa, new recruits Johan Manzambi (knee) and Joao Gomes (calf) have joined Brian Madjo (unspecified), Leon Bailey (muscle), and long-term absentee Amadou Onana (knee) on the injury list.
Alejandro Garnacho (concussion) and Tammy Abraham (knock) are both under evaluation, while Ollie Watkins’s status remains uncertain amid interest from Al-Hilal, with Emery unable to assure that the striker will remain with the club during Friday’s press conference.
Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, along with defenders Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, were confirmed as new additions earlier this week and could potentially make their debuts on Sunday, with Suzuki being the most likely choice to start in goal ahead of Emiliano Martinez.
Konsa’s £51m transfer to Arsenal was finalized on Friday, meaning Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof may form the center-back partnership, while Matty Cash and Ian Maatsen are likely to begin as full-backs.
Brighton & Hove Albion probable starting XI:
Consume; Weiffer, Dunk, Vuskovic, Kadioglu; Ayari, Gross; Gomez, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper; Rutter
Aston Villa probable starting XI:
Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Hemmings; McGinn, Barkley, Buendia; Watkins
Aston Villa’s strong record against Brighton should instill confidence as they head to the South Coast, but Emery must navigate this match after witnessing the core of his Europa League-winning squad significantly altered in the summer transfer window.
The visitors are expected to field a competitive team against a fatigued Seagulls side that is recuperating from a lengthy Conference League qualifier in Norway. Given these circumstances, both teams may need to settle for a draw.
