Lecce vs Genoa – News and Probable Lineups

In a crucial match to escape relegation, Lecce is set to host a struggling Genoa at the Stadio Via del Mare. This final match could determine their fate.

Currently 17th in the Serie A table and fighting for survival by just one point, the Apulian side understands that any mistake could harshly terminate their four-year tenure in the top league, while the 14th-placed visitors have pride as their sole mission.

Match overview

Lecce has only managed to secure one win from nine outings (D2, L6) between late February and April, and they are winless in the last six during this slump. However, two wins out of their last three fixtures (L1) have provided them with essential leverage over their direct competitor in the relegation battle.

During a time when 18th-placed Cremonese also gathered six points from a possible nine, Eusebio Di Françasco’s squad secured a win over bottom-placed Pisa, and then bounced back from a narrow defeat against top-four pursuing Juventus to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory at Sassuolo last weekend.

In a match that saw the momentum shift multiple times, Lecce was twice brought back to level terms after taking the lead with a brace from Walid Cheddira, but a stoppage-time goal from Nikola Stulic ensured that the Giallorossi returned home from Emilia-Romagna with all three points.

That result continued an intriguing trend for Lecce, as all five of their victories from 21 matches (D4, L12) in 2026 have come exclusively in matches where they scored more than once, meaning their safety this weekend may depend entirely on an inspired attacking display.

Just one point ahead of 18th-placed Cremonese, Lecce is aware that matching the Lombard club’s result would be sufficient to maintain their status in the top division. However, a dramatic relegation play-off could still be triggered if Di Françasco’s squad falls to defeat while their survival rivals draw against top-four aspiring Como.

This scenario leaves securing a victory as the clearest path to safety for Lecce, although doubts linger due to their unconvincing home record, having won only two of their last 10 league fixtures (D2, L6) at the Via del Mare.

In contrast to the hosts, Genoa has little at stake in this game, as they are already assured of avoiding relegation for the third consecutive season while remaining mathematically unable to crack the top half of the table, similar to their previous campaigns since returning to the top flight in 2023-24.

Nevertheless, the Grifone will seek to end the season on a positive note after failing to win any of their last four matches (D2, L2), which included goalless draws against Atalanta and Fiorentina interspersed with home defeats to Como (2-0) and AC Milan (2-1).

Last weekend’s loss to the Rossoneri saw Genoa concede two goals after halftime from a Christopher Nkunku penalty and a Zachary Athekame strike, with Johan Vasquez’s 86th-minute response serving only as a consolation.

Like Lecce this weekend, Genoa’s recent successes are characterized by attacking effectiveness, with the Ligurian club winning five of their last 13 games (D3, L5) only when they managed to score multiple goals.

That said, the Grifone is unbeaten in their last four encounters (W2, D2) with Lecce, including a scoreless draw in the previous meeting, although they have not taken all three points from any of their last four visits (D3, L1) to Via del Mare.

Furthermore, their away performance this season does not inspire confidence, given that Genoa has only won four of their 18 league away games (D7, L7), although they have earned points in four (W2, D2) of their last five trips while recording three clean sheets.

Team News

Last weekend’s win came at a cost for Lecce, as attacker Lameck Banda had to be substituted early and is now suffering from muscle discomfort, placing his participation in this season’s finale in serious doubt.

Furthermore, Di Françasco faces additional selection issues with forward Santiago Pierotti also leaving that same match early due to a knee injury, which could open up opportunities for Konan N’Dri to step in on the wing.

Additions to the injury list include Albânian midfielder Medon Berisha, who remains incapacitated due to a thigh injury, while winger Riccardo Sottil is also expected to miss out once again because of an ongoing back problem.

On the other hand, Genoa may make the journey south without their defensive pair, Leo Ostigard (knock) and Brooke Norton-Cuffy (thigh), both of whom are racing against time to recover.

De Rossi’s offensive choices are also limited, with Maxwel Cornet and Junior Messias likely to miss a third consecutive match due to muscle injuries.

The Rossoblu will additionally have to approach this last match without forward Vitinha, who triggered a one-match ban after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season during the previous game.

Lecce probable starting XI:

Falcone; Veiga, Siebert, Gabriel, Gallo; Ramadani, Ngom; Konan, Coulibaly, Stulic; Cheddar

Genoa probable starting XI:

Bijlow; Marcandalli, Otoa, Vasquez; Ellertsson, Amorim, Frendrup, Martin; Baldanzi, Ekhator; Colombo

It’s possible that the goal-scoring patterns which have led both teams to recent victories may manifest again here, indicating that a desperate Lecce side could narrowly triumph in this match, aided by the fervent support of their home crowd and the fact that they have everything to play for.
