The Primeira Liga returns on Friday following a three-week break, with Braga set to host Sporting Lisbon at Minho, marking a highlight of matchday eight.
The home side is currently sixth in the Portuguese top division, four points behind their rivals who are positioned third, sitting just one point behind Benfica, who are second, and six points off the leaders.
Match overview
Braga, who missed out on a Europa League berth despite finishing fourth last season due to Torreense’s unexpected Taca de Portugal victory over Sporting, realize that the path back to one of Europe’s elite competitions would be more secure with a top-three finish.
Nonetheless, Carlos Vicens’s team has had an uneven start to the 2026-27 league season, partly due to their erratic schedule, as they have managed to win only half of their six league fixtures thus far (D2, L1).
Braga still has to complete their postponed matchday two clash against Gil Vicente, while their sole defeat in the Primeira Liga occurred at Estrela Amadora during a rescheduled matchday three encounter on September 10, following a season opener that ended in a draw against Moreirense.
The Archbishops recovered from that loss with a narrow win over Estoril Praia on matchday six, but they could not capitalize on that success in their most recent match, playing to a goalless draw away against unbeaten Santa Clara just prior to the international break.
The upcoming fixture marks Braga’s toughest challenge of the current campaign, yet Vicens’s side will be bolstered by an impeccable home record in 2026-27, having secured five wins without conceding in any of those matches, which includes league victories over Vitoria de Guimaraes and Estoril.
Sporting, while being one of the three teams still unbeaten in the 2026-27 season, have struggled to keep pace in the title race, having recorded four victories out of their seven league encounters to date.
The side led by Rui Borges appears to be on a trajectory similar to last season, where they could not retain their title after finishing as runners-up six points behind Porto, with the same gap now separating them from the summit after seven matches.
After opening their season with a disappointing draw at Estrela, the Lions achieved four consecutive league victories over Vitoria, Alverca, Rio Ave, and Nacional. Their Champions League success over Galatasaray marked five straight wins in total across competitions.
However, Sporting headed into the international break without a win in their last two fixtures, following a draw at Famalicao and a disappointing 2-2 result against Arouca at Estadio Jose Alvalade, where they initially led 2-0 thanks to goals from Goncalo Inacio and Luis Suarez.
Zeno Debast’s 54th-minute red card proved detrimental in the closing stages, as the Lions conceded two late goals, one from a Jose Fontan penalty and another from Dylan Nandín, resulting in a loss of six points from winning positions this season.
They will aim to return to winning ways this weekend, although Sporting faces a challenging encounter against a side with whom they have drawn in their last three matches. Importantly, they have not suffered a league defeat away at Braga in their last six visits (W3, D3), with their last loss at this venue dating back to February 2020 when they fell 1-0.
Team News
Braga is expected to remain without Sikou Niakate as he continues his recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon that has sidelined him since April.
There are no significant new injury worries among those players returning from international duty, although Gustaf Lagerbielke is a potential doubt after having missed recent Swedish matches due to illness.
Sporting might again be without Georgios Vagiannidis, who returned early from international duty with a muscular issue, while Nuno Santos is close to making a return from a knee injury that has kept him out since May.
Debast is likely to serve his suspension following his red card against Arouca, but the return of Ibrahim Ba from a knee injury could provide Borges with an additional defensive option.
Several other squad members have resumed training following their international responsibilities, including Fotis Ioannidis, Issa Doumbia, Rafael Nel, and Flavio Goncalves.
Maxi Araujo and Luis Suarez are anticipated to return no more than a day before the match after lengthy international travel, while Rodrigo Zalazar – who is set to play against his former club – is also among the trio of South American players in a similar situation.
Braga probable starting XI
Bernardo; Barisic, V Carvalho, Bajrami; Gomez, Gorby, Tiknaz, Martinez; Horta, Milosevic, P Victor
Sporting Lisbon probable starting XI
Silva; Fresneda, Quaresma, Inácio, R Dias; ALTIMIRA, Doumbia; Catamo, F Goncalves, Guilherme; Ioannidis
Braga has been formidable at home this season and appears particularly robust in defense, yet managing to keep a Sporting team that has scored in every match thus far may prove to be a challenging feat.
A draw might therefore be plausible, especially considering the visitors’ recent difficulties in converting advantageous situations into maximum points.
