Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich – News and Probable Lineups

If Bayern Munich suffers a defeat against hosts Werder Bremen at Weserstadion on Saturday, it could pave the way for Borussia Dortmund to close the gap in the Bundesliga title chase.

Currently sitting at the top of the table, the Bavarians have 54 points, just six points clear of second-placed Dortmund, while their opponents on Saturday languish in 16th place with only 19 points after a 1-0 defeat to Freiburg on February 7.

Match overview

Bremen’s performance against Freiburg was once again underwhelming, as they managed to achieve only 0.97 xG despite having a man advantage from the 52nd minute.

The Green-Whites find themselves in the relegation playoff position, two points above 17th-placed St Pauli, but level on points with 15th-placed Wolfsburg.

Head coach Daniel Thioune, recently appointed on February 4, cannot be entirely blamed for the team’s struggles this season, though he will undoubtedly be concerned about their streak of 11 Bundesliga matches without a win.

This marks the longest winless run in the league, where the team failed to score in seven of those matches and conceded at least two goals on six occasions.

Bremen’s recent home form shows three draws and two losses in their last five games, although they did manage to win their previous three matches at Weserstadion.

Bayern showed their attacking prowess in a convincing 5-1 victory over Hoffenheim on February 8, registering more than six xG, 11 significant chances, and scoring five goals for the eighth time this season.

Following that, the Bavarians secured a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Vincent Kompany’s side is scheduled to meet Dortmund on February 28, and the head coach is fully aware of the need to take BVB’s recent form seriously, as they have won their last five league matches.

In their previous encounter in September 2025, the visitors triumphed over Werder Bremen with a score of 4-0, marking their seventh win in eight face-offs with the Green-Whites.

Bayern remains unbeaten in their last four matches, winning three times, with 11 goals scored and four conceded.

Kompany’s team has also not lost in their last seven away matches, securing victories in six of those games.

Team News

Werder Bremen striker Victor Boniface is set to miss out due to a knee injury, meaning Keke Topp is expected to lead the line again.

With defenders like Amos Pieper (knee) and Niklas Stark (hip) unavailable, Julian Malatini, Marco Friedl, and Karim Coulibaly may form a three-man defense.

Bayern’s only absentee is winger Michael Olise, who is serving a suspension after accumulating five yellow cards.

Teenager Lennart Karl is likely to step in for the suspended forward, with Luis Diaz expected to start on the left wing.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will look to rely on center-backs Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae to limit the number of saves he has to make.

Werder Bremen probable starting XI:

bakery; Malatini, Friedl, Coulibaly; Sugawara, Stage, Lynen, Schmid, Agu; Grull, great

Bayern Munich probable starting XI:

Neuer; Stanisic, Tah, Kim, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Karl, Musiala, Diaz; Kane

Indications suggest that Werder Bremen’s defense may struggle to manage the attacking capability that Bayern brings.

Kompany’s team has an impressive track record against their hosts, and should feel confident in securing another three points.
