Manchester United vs Bayern Munich – News and Probable Lineups

The Women’s team of Manchester United is set to host Bayern Munich Women at Old Trafford for the upcoming Women’s Champions League match on Wednesday.

The German side advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing in the top four during the league phase, while the Red Devils progressed through a playoff against Atletico Madrid.

Match overview

Manchester United are the last remaining team in the competition to be making their quarter-final debut, having successfully navigated their way to the last eight in their inaugural main draw participation.

The Red Devils concluded the league phase in sixth place, achieving four wins from six fixtures (L2), which led them to a knockout playoff match against Atletico Madrid.

Under Marc Skinner, the team secured a 3-0 victory in the Spanish capital and followed it up with a 2-0 win at Leigh Sports Village.

However, Manchester United have faced some challenges since defeating the Spanish squad, including defeats to Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round and in the League Cup final, along with a disappointing draw against West Ham United in the Women’s Super League.

They were poised for more disappointment when Everton’s Inma Gabarro equalized in the 90th minute during Saturday’s home match, but luckily for Manchester United, Melvine Malard scored a late winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time, propelling her side into second place in the battle for UWCL qualification.

This win also represented the club’s sixth consecutive home triumph across all competitions, providing a motivational boost ahead of the daunting UWCL clash with the German champions this Wednesday.

On the other hand, Bayern avoided the knockout playoffs by finishing fourth in the league phase.

Jose Barcala’s team ended the league stage a point ahead of both Arsenal and Manchester United, posting four wins, one draw, and one loss out of six matches.

Bayern harbors ambitions of reaching the UWCL final for the first time, while also aiming to capture the Frauen-Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal, in addition to the DFB-Supercup they have already claimed this season.

The Bavarians maintained their commanding 11-point lead at the top of the Frauen-Bundesliga table with an emphatic 5-0 victory against relegation-threatened Essen over the weekend.

Pernille Harder scored two goals, complemented by strikes from Linda Dallmann, Natalia Padilla, and Edna Imade, as Bayern secured a tenth successive win, extending their unbeaten streak to 22 matches in all competitions (W21, D1).

Indeed, the German powerhouse has triumphed in their last six competitive away fixtures by a total aggregate score of 18-1, which underscores their status as favorites heading into their first encounter with Manchester United.
