Fluminense vs. Corinthians – News and Probable Lineups

While Fluminense revels in its best start to a season’s first half since 2012, Corinthians comes to the Maracana facing a goalscoring dilemma that threatens to derail a campaign which commenced with triumph in the Brasilian Super Cup.

This ninth-round Brasileiro 2026 encounter sees the third-highest scoring team in the league (13 goals) face off against the second least effective (seven), with a long list of absentees further complicating matters for the visitors. At least six players are sidelined due to international duty, injuries, and suspensions, while the home team boasts a nearly full squad and the support of the Maracana crowd.

Match overview

The international break came as a much-needed pause after a grueling schedule that had seen teams play almost every three days since January, compressing state championships into the start of Serie A.

For Fluminense, the break was a welcome relief following four matches in 12 days during rounds five to eight. Luis Zubeldia’s team has garnered 16 points from eight games, achieving four victories, one draw, and three losses.

The foundation of their campaign has largely been their strong performances at the Maracana, where the Tricolor has secured three wins out of four home matches, with only one draw conceded. Even when stumbling, the response has been swift. After squandering a two-goal advantage and losing 3-2 to Vasco in the seventh round, Fluminense bounced back with a narrow but confident 1-0 win against Atletico Mineiro, thanks to Rodrigo Castillo’s goal and a crucial save from Fabio at the death.

At 45 years old, the goalkeeper continues to be a pillar of reliability and leadership in the Tricolor’s defense. Fabio has tallied more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Brasileiro since joining the club, underscoring his significance both on and off the field.

In terms of attack, the combination of Lucho Acosta and Savarino has served as the main creative influence on the team, to the extent that fans have coined the nickname “SavaLucho” for the duo. The Argentine has contributed three goals and three assists in 14 appearances this season, figures that have already exceeded his total output for 2025. Savarino, who was released from the Venezuelan national squad prior to the international fixtures, trained consistently throughout the week at the Carlos Castilho training center and will likely start.

Conversely, Corinthians is experiencing their toughest patch of the 2026 season. They have not won in five matches in the Brasileiro (four draws and one defeat) and have gone six matches without victory across all competitions, including their elimination by Novorizontino in the Paulistao semi-finals.

With a win rate of 41 percent in Serie A, Corinthians is falling short of the expectations set by the board and supporters for a side that won the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Brasilian Super Cup in February against Flamengo. The main issue has been a lack of finishing ability.

Out of the seven goals Corinthians has netted in the Brasileiro, only five have been scored by forwards, and their average of 0.88 goals per match ranks as the second worst in the league. Memphis Depay has yet to score in six outings this season and is currently recovering from a grade-two thigh injury in the Países Baixos, with no return expected until May.

While the attack presents concerns, the defense has been the backbone of the team. Having conceded only seven goals over eight rounds, Corinthians holds the third-best defensive record in Serie A and has allowed just two goals in four away matches, averaging 0.5 per game.

Defender Gustavo Henrique anchors the backline and has also proven to be an essential asset during set pieces, an area where Corinthians often find a goal-scoring opportunity. From April onward, the club will also be engaged in the Copa Libertadores, a factor that will necessitate squad depth during a critical time in the season. Effective management of resources will be vital if the team hopes to address inconsistencies, rebuild confidence, and pursue more ambitious goals in this Brasileiro.

Team News

Fluminense’s key absentee is forward Agustin Canobbio, who received his first call-up to the Uruguayan national team in nearly two years. He played for Uruguay on March 31 in Turin and is expected to arrive in Brazil only on the day of the match, making his participation nearly impossible. On a positive note for Zubeldia, Savarino stayed in Rio de Janeiro after being released by Venezuela and trained regularly throughout the break.

In Canobbio’s absence, Kevin Serna and Soteldo are the top candidates to take on the attacking role. The medical report also includes Nonato, Bernal, and Matheus Reis, all of whom are recuperating from injuries. Aside from these absences, the rest of the squad is available, including Alisson – the club’s sixth signing of the season made during the latest transfer window.

Corinthians’ list of issues is more extensive and worrisome. Goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who was called up by the Brazilian national team for friendlies against France and Croatia, will not be back in time for the match. Andre Carrillo, currently with the Peruvian squad, is also unavailable. The club considered chartering flights to hasten the return of their players but abandoned the plan due to costs and potential physical strain.

Memphis Depay is continuing his recovery in the Países Baixos following his thigh injury and is expected to be out for at least another month. Kaio Cesar remains sidelined with no confirmed return date, and Raniele will be suspended for an automatic match ban after receiving multiple yellow cards.

A notable positive for Corinthians is Jesse Lingard. He has been officially registered and cleared by the CBF, making a strong impression in training and could soon see his first minutes in the black-and-white shirt. Given the depleted attacking options, he represents a tangible alternative for Dorival Junior. Felipe Longo, who has recovered from an elbow strain, is anticipated to step in as goalkeeper in Hugo Souza’s absence.

Fluminense probable starting XI:

Fabius; Xavier, Jemmes, Freytes, Arana; Martinelli, Hercules; Savarino, Acosta, Canobbio; Castle.

Corinthians probable starting XI:

Far away; Matheuzinho, Paulista, Henrique, Bidu; Luiz, Bidon, Pereira; Garro; Alberto, Vitinho

Fluminense is in much stronger form and despite Corinthians’ solid defense at the outset of this season, Fluminense’s remarkable attack is likely to secure them the victory and all three points.
