Botafogo vs Independiente Petrolero – News and Probable Lineups

On Tuesday, Botafogo will take the pitch at Nilton Santos Stadium to compete against Independiente Petrolero, marking the first encounter between the two clubs as they kick off the third round of the Copa Sudamericana, hoping to stay at the summit of Group E.

Both teams enter this match at different positions in the table, with Botafogo in the lead and the Bolivian team at the bottom after two losses. Consequently, a home win for Botafogo would strengthen their status as favorites for advancing to the knockout stages.

Match overview

Under the direction of Franclim Carvalho, Botafogo aims for a solid finish in the group stage to secure direct passage to the round of 16, having drawn 1-1 with Caracas FC and managed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Racing Club in their initial two fixtures of the Copa Sudamericana.

As the leaders in their group, Botafogo could create a four-point advantage over third place if Caracas triumph over Racing in this round. Carvalho has made a positive impact in Rio de Janeiro, recording three wins and three draws in his first six matches at the helm.

Nonetheless, the Portuguese coach has yet to address the defensive issues that have troubled the squad throughout 2026, with the team conceding goals in four of their last five matches, including a 2-2 draw against Internacional in the 13th round of the Brasileirao, where strikes from Danilo and Medina were matched by goals from Carbonero and Bernabei.

This outcome at Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha has left Botafogo with 17 points from five wins, two draws, and five losses, and they hold the poorest defensive record in the league, having allowed 24 goals.

As the club maneuvers through an institutional crisis due to the judicial suspension of John Textor from the leadership of the club’s SAF over increasing debts, Botafogo is seeking a favorable result in front of their fans, as they prepare for their fifth official matchup against Bolivian teams in continental play.

For Independiente Petrolero, this match represents only their third participation in a CONMEBOL tournament. The club, established in 1932, previously competed in the 1999 Copa CONMEBOL and the 2022 Copa Libertadores, where they were placed in a group with Palmeiras.

Their most significant domestic achievement arrived in 2021 when they were crowned champions of the Primera División. They qualified for this Copa Sudamericana after finishing sixth in the last campaign and subsequently knocked out Guabira on penalties following a 0-0 draw in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, their Group E journey has been lackluster so far, having suffered defeats to Racing (3-1) and Caracas (1-0), placing them at the bottom of the standings. Consequently, another loss at Nilton Santos might prematurely extinguish their hopes of advancing, even with three matches still to play.

Petrolero travels to Brazil under the guidance of Thiago Leitao, the 47-year-old former player who launched his coaching career in 2019 and clinched the Bolivian league title in 2024 with San Antonio Bulo Bulo.

After four rounds in the domestic league, Petrolero stands fifth with seven points and comes into this fixture in robust form, having achieved back-to-back 2-1 victories against Bolivar and Universitario de Vinto, a stark contrast to their troubles in continental contests.

Team News

Botafogo faces a fresh concern ahead of Tuesday’s clash, as Vitinho has experienced flu-like symptoms before being substituted in the first half against Internacional, which could see him rested while Mateo Ponte is likely to take his place on the right flank.

The club is also managing injuries for four players—Chris Ramos, Kaio Pantaleao, Nathan Fernandes, and Santi Rodriguez—while Carvalho may shuffle his lineup slightly due to the congested fixture schedule.

Midfielder Danilo has been the standout player this season, leading the team’s scoring chart in the Brasileirao with seven goals and two assists, underscoring his vital role within the squad.

On the other hand, Independiente Petrolero comes in with a full squad, as Leitao is expected to field an unchanged lineup as they seek their first points of the group stage.

A notable player to keep an eye on is seasoned Brazilian midfielder Willie, who has played for clubs such as Ceara Sporting Club and Santa Cruz, and currently tops Petrolero’s scoring ranks in the Bolivian league with two goals.

Botafogo possible starting lineup:

Grandchild; Ponte, Ferraresi, Barboza, Telles; Danilo, Medina (Allan); Santos, Edenilson (Alvaro Montoro), Martins; Cabral

Independiente Petrolero possible starting lineup:

Gutierrez; Torres, Montero, Montenegro, Rodriguez; Rojas, Cristaldo, Willie; Villavicencio, Cardozo, Cristaldo

Since Carvalho’s appointment, Botafogo has demonstrated noticeable progress in their offensive play, averaging 2.1 goals per game over six encounters, with four of these matches resulting in over 3.5 goals, attributable in part to their defensive weaknesses.

Conversely, Petrolero arrives with a poor defensive record, having conceded in nine consecutive fixtures and allowing more than 2.5 goals in three of those games. Given the evident disparity in quality between the two sides, a convincing victory for Botafogo seems highly probable, with a predicted scoreline of 4-0.
