Famalicao xArouca - prediction, team news, lineups

In search of their initial home victory this campaign, Famalicao host a confident Arouca team at the Estadio Municipal 22 de Junho on Friday evening.

The home side currently occupies 11th place in the Primeira Liga standings, three points clear of the relegation zone, while the guests find themselves in fifth position, ahead of sixth-placed Academico de Viseu due to goal difference.

Match overview

Famalicao has faced challenges in replicating the form that secured them a club-record fifth-place finish last season, with the exits of former head coach Hugo Oliveira, Ibrahima Ba, and Gustavo Sa playing a role in their rocky start to the new season.

Carlos Carvalhal, who took the helm this summer, was let go in October after a surprising defeat in the Taca de Portugal against third-tier Paredes, leaving assistant coach Ricardo Silva, aged 46, to manage the team temporarily.

Although Silva began on a high note, securing a 4-0 away win over Rio Ave and narrowly defeating Braga on penalties in the Taca da Liga quarter-finals, the Vila Nova squad faced a reality check last weekend, losing 3-0 to the same Minho rivals in the league.

That defeat left Famalicao with only two wins from their first 10 Primeira Liga matches this season (D4, L4), while they have netted 14 goals and conceded as many, underscoring the necessity for improved performance at both ends of the pitch.

Moreover, Famalicao has struggled on home soil at the Estadio Municipal 22 de Junho this season, with Fama being among three clubs in the league yet to secure a home victory, having garnered just two points from four matches at their venue, the latest being a 4-1 loss to Alverca.

Arouca, in contrast, arrives in significantly better shape compared to the home side, having had an excellent start under Vitor Severino, who took over in October following Vasco Seabra’s exit to Rio Ave.

While the Wolves had experienced a promising season under Seabra, Severino took over a squad that hadn’t won in three matches but has since steered them to four straight victories in the league and the Taca de Portugal.

An extra-time cup triumph against Belenenses came in between three consecutive 1-0 league victories over Estrela Amadora, Alverca, and Nacional, resulting in Arouca scoring 13 goals and conceding seven in their first 10 Primeira Liga encounters, along with a league-high total of six clean sheets.

The Wolves have also shown resilience on their travels, with their sole defeat in five league away games this season coming at the hands of defending champions Porto. Two wins and two draws have earned them eight points, placing them as the eighth-best away team in the division.

Nevertheless, Arouca has struggled in recent matchups against Famalicao, remaining winless in their last four competitive fixtures and losing two of their last three league visits to Vila Nova, while not scoring during that stretch.

Team News

Famalicao will miss Rodrigo Pinheiro as he is suspended after being shown a red card during last weekend’s league loss to Braga.

Georgios Koutsias is anticipated to spearhead the attack after netting five league goals this season, while Sorriso and Romeo Beney could supply support from the wings, with Oscar Aranda also available as an option in wide positions.

Arouca appears to have a much healthier squad, with Miguel Puche the only significant absentee as he continues rehabilitation from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Gabriel Rukavina is back in contention following a one-match suspension due to his expulsion against Alverca, although the midfielder has yet to start a league match since his arrival from Rijeka this summer.

Ivan Barbero is likely to lead the line as he aims to add to his five league goals this season, while Nais Djouahra is expected to play a key role after registering five assists in the league.

Famalicao probable starting XI:

Carevic; Garcia, Rofino, Realpe, Bondo; Van de Looi, De Amorim; Beney, Santos, Sorriso; Koutsias.

Arouca probable starting XI:

De Arruabar’s; Esgaio, Sanchez, Fontan, Lebedenko; Van Ee, Fukui; Trezza, Flores, Djouahra; barber

Given Famalicao’s struggles at home and the instability surrounding their interim management, backing them against an Arouca side that has found its footing and has been notably solid defensively may prove difficult, suggesting a narrow away win is probable.
