A swift rematch from the EFL Cup’s fourth round sees Newcastle United take on Everton, wrapping up Premier League gameweek nine at St James’ Park on Monday evening.
David Moyes orchestrated a 3-1 victory for the Toffees over the Magpies midweek, but Newcastle arrives at this matchup three positions and one point ahead in the Premier League standings.
Match overview
The hopes of clinching a second League Cup title in three years for Newcastle were quickly dashed at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last week, as a rapid-fire flurry from Everton knocked Matthias Jaissle’s side out prematurely.
After 34 minutes without a goal, James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Thierno Barry propelled Everton into a 3-0 lead by the 69th minute, rendering Dan Burn’s late goal a mere consolation.
The defeat on Merseyside marked the third loss in four matches for Jaissle’s unpredictable Newcastle across all competitions, however, they managed to halt their Premier League slump with a 2-0 victory against struggling Crystal Palace in gameweek eight.
This third victory of the season in the top tier helped keep the Magpies in the top half of the table, at least until the fixtures of Saturday and Sunday are played out, but among the top ten teams in the Premier League, only Chelsea (15 goals) conceded more goals than Newcastle’s 14 during the opening eight rounds.
Moreover, of Newcastle’s four home fixtures in the Premier League for the 2026-27 season, only one has ended favorably, and Jaissle’s side is yet to secure a clean sheet at St James’ Park in any competition this term, having allowed in eight goals over five games in total.
Statistics indicate that Everton might not be the most opportune side to take advantage of Newcastle’s defensive vulnerabilities at home, as they have struggled to find the back of the net in two of their last three away encounters after succumbing to Arsenal at the weekend.
After becoming the first victims of Arsenal’s corner goal this season, a scrappy finish from Ezri Konsa, Moyes’s men found themselves conceding yet again from a cross in the latter stages, with Gabriel Magalhaes sealing a 2-0 victory for the champions.
Moving forward to the League Cup quarter-finals, where they will meet Arsenal’s conquerors Fleetwood Town at Highbury, this result against Newcastle offered a temporary relief, but the Toffees now travel through the north of England having lost their grip in the top flight.
Once unbeaten in their opening six fixtures of the season, Everton has since lost both of their last two without scoring, and they continue to seek their first Premier League victory away from home this campaign, with three draws and one defeat recorded in their first four travels.
Nonetheless, Thursday’s EFL Cup win highlighted Everton’s recent dominance over Newcastle, as they have emerged victorious in three of their last four encounters, with the Magpies only triumphing once in their last seven matches against the Toffees—a 4-1 rout at Hill Dickinson Stadium back in November 2025.
Team News
Jaissle made a trio of substitutions last Thursday while trailing 2-0, replacing Jacob Ramsey, Harvey Barnes, and Will Osula, with the latter’s withdrawal being forced due to an ankle twist.
The fitness of Osula for Monday remains uncertain, along with Lewis Miley (muscle) and Matias Fernandez-Pardo (illness), while Ewen Jaouen (hamstring) and Tino Livramento (knee) are both unavailable.
Yoane Wissa could step in for Osula in the attacking line if he is ruled out, and Joelinton is anticipated to take over Ramsey’s midfield role.
On Everton’s side, the notable absence of Jack Grealish due to a breach of club discipline—reportedly for missing a training session—was the primary topic on Thursday night, and it remains unclear if the £100m winger will return to the matchday squad.
Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George were deployed in the wide positions in Grealish’s stead against Arsenal, but given that the former has yet to meet expectations, Tyler Dibling might be set for a delayed Premier League start following his appearance in the cup.
In more positive news for Moyes, he is optimistic that Jarrad Branthwaite will clear concussion protocols in time for Monday, meaning either Merlin Rohl or Jake O’Brien could face a challenge for their positions.
Newcastle United probable starting XI:
Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Joelinton, Gonzalez; Murphy, Willock, Barnes; Wissa
Everton probable starting XI:
Pickford; Rohl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Hackney, Garner; Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry
While Everton’s cup success over Newcastle might not carry significant meaning, the Magpies are returning to a venue where they have consistently scored at least twice in all but one of their fixtures this season.
That said, Newcastle’s defensive shortcomings continue to be exposed, thus Moyes’s men may feel optimistic about coming away with points.
