PSV Eindhoven aims for back-to-back Champions League victories for the first time since January of the previous year as they welcome Club Brugge to Philips Stadion on the fourth matchday.
Peter Bosz’s squad achieved a 1-0 victory against Porto in their last outing, marking their first clean sheet in the competition since November 2024. They now look to surpass their 11th-placed Belgian opponents with a win.
Match overview
Recently, PSV’s form had declined leading up to their win at Porto on matchday three, halting a streak of two consecutive losses and three defeats in four fixtures.
Bosz’s side had not lost in seven matches across all competitions until their 3-2 defeat to FC Twente just before the international break, which resulted in a drop in both performances and results.
There was a noticeable decline in the attacking phase for the Dutch giants, who typically struggling to score more than one goal in four of their six prior fixtures before the weekend’s 7-0 win over Willem II.
However, given that Willem II is the bottom team in the Dutch league, the significant win against the struggling team may not reveal much about their form.
Supporters must have been pleased to see the 1987-88 European Cup winners rediscover some rhythm before their clash with Club Brugge, as the Peasants seek their first win against Belgian competitors in this tournament after losing to Anderlecht in 2000-01 and Union Saint-Gilloise last season.
Ending their losing streak will be a challenging task against the 20-time Belgian champions, who have bounced back from their opening 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa with two straight victories.
The standout match of that run was an impressive 4-3 victory over three-time European Cup champions Inter de Milão at San Siro, which was followed by a 3-0 win against Lens in Bruges.
These successes have contributed to Blauw-Zwart’s eight-match winning streak in both domestic and European competitions, elevating Ivan Leko’s team to 11th in the group stage standings, seven places ahead of their Eindhoven hosts.
The Brugge side have been prolific in finding the back of the net during this streak, managing to outscore Inter in Europe as well as St. Truidense and Zulte Waregem; they have also shown the ability to secure narrow and comfortable wins, exemplified by victories over Lokeren (1-0), Genk (3-0), and Lens (3-0).
A third straight win could propel FC Bruges into the coveted top eight spots, but they will need to secure a victory away at Dutch opponents for the first time in three attempts after drawing with Twente in the 1989-90 UEFA Cup and suffering a Champions League loss at Ajax in 2003-04.
Team News
PSV faces several injury concerns ahead of matchday four, with Paul Wanner and Sam Lammers needing late fitness tests to determine their availability, while Sami Ouaissa, Alassane Plea, and Jerdy Schouten are ruled out.
Sven Mijnans, who was suspended for De Kraker against Feyenoord, made a significant impact in the weekend’s 7-0 thrashing of Willem II by both scoring and assisting, thus extending his record of either scoring or assisting in three consecutive matches.
Guus Til has been equally impressive, having scored or assisted in four successive games, including his decisive goal in the 1-0 victory against Porto last month, and he aims to continue his streak on Wednesday.
Nicolo Tresoldi has emerged as the star player for the Belgian team, netting four of their nine goals in the Champions League, representing 44% of their European scoring; no other player has found the net more than once, highlighting the young forward’s remarkable continental performance.
While Club Brugge has a fit squad, Leko will be without Joel Ordonez, who has not featured since Ecuador’s defeat to Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.
PSV Eindhoven probable starting XI:
Kovar; Dest, Geertruida, Obispo, Kostic; Sano, Junior; Perisic, Til, Van Bommel; Mijnans
Club Brugge probable starting XI:
Summer; Sabbe, Spileers, Mechele, Seys; Potts, Vanaken; Forbs, Vetlesen, Virgili; Wood soldiers
Although scoring seven against the Eredivisie’s bottom side may not necessarily indicate the end of PSV’s inconsistency, especially against a team that has already proven their quality at San Siro.
With Tresoldi leading a confident attack and Leko’s players showcasing various ways to secure victories during their eight-match streak, the visitors are expected to maintain their impressive form.
