PSG vs Brest – News and Probable Lineups

Having secured a spot in the Champions League final earlier this week, Paris Saint-Germain returns to domestic play on Sunday, hosting Brest at Parc des Princes. A win would virtually solidify their fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title.

A dramatic 6-5 aggregate victory against Bayern Munich propelled Luis Enrique’s team to their second consecutive final in Europe’s prestigious competition. They now head into this clash with a six-point advantage at the top of the French league table.

Match overview

In stark contrast to last week’s thrilling nine-goal encounter in Paris, Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in Munich showcased PSG’s more disciplined defensive approach. Scoring early gave Enrique’s squad the opportunity to maintain their aggregate lead effectively.

Ousmane Dembele netted in the third minute after an assist from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Les Parisiens maintained their composure—threatening on the counter while neutralizing Harry Kane’s 94th-minute equalizer which had little bearing on the tie overall.

With a final against Arsenal set for May 30 in Budapest, PSG is positioned to defend both the Champions League and Ligue 1 titles, despite their earlier exit from the Coupe de França ruling out the possibility of a treble.

Although Les Parisiens maintain a six-point lead at the top, that margin could shrink to three points before their match this weekend, as second-placed Lens faces Nantes on Friday. Thus, a victory is crucial for PSG to relieve any potential stress.

Nonetheless, PSG approaches Sunday’s fixture eager to return to winning ways domestically after drawing 2-2 with Lorient in their last league match at Parc des Princes, leaving them with only two wins from their last five home games (D1, L2) in Ligue 1.

Despite the home team’s recent inconsistency, Brest is not expected to spring a surprise; the Pirates are winless in their last six matches (D2, L4) and have conceded at least two goals in five of those outings.

Brest’s defensive shortcomings were evident last weekend as they faced a humiliating 4-0 defeat against PSG’s local rivals, Paris FC. This result left Brest in 12th place in the standings, four points away from the top half but already safe from relegation.

The current run for Brest is a significant downturn from their earlier stretch, where they went six matches unbeaten, achieving four clean sheet victories. Any chance of a favorable outcome on Sunday likely hinges on a substantial defensive improvement.

However, this may be too tall an order for a team that has only managed two shutouts in 16 away league games this season, winning only three times on the road in Ligue 1 (D4, L9).

Historical records don’t favor Brest either, as they have lost 20 of their last 21 encounters with PSG, with the most recent four defeats coming by at least three goals, including a 3-0 loss in the reverse fixture last October.

Team News

PSG’s recent success in Europe can be attributed largely to Enrique’s astute management of squad rotation, making it likely that several starters from the Bayern match are rested for this fixture.

Bradley Barcola may return to the starting XI, which could allow Kvaratskhelia some time to rest, while Ibrahim Mbaye might also be included from the beginning, and Goncalo Ramos is expected to lead the attack again after serving a suspension in the previous league match.

Club captain Marquinhos has not made double-digit league appearances this season, suggesting another rest is possible, which may see Illia Zabarnyi come back into the defense alongside Lucas Beraldo, who might also serve in midfield if needed.

On the injury front, Achraf Hakimi remains out with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return until later this month, while Quentin Ndjantou and Lucas Chevalier are also unavailable due to similar issues.

For Brest, Bradley Locko continues to recover from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the last three fixtures, while center-back Soumaila Coulibaly could miss a second consecutive game.

Furthermore, the visitors will be missing defender Kenny Lala due to suspension from accumulated bookings, although Daouda Guindo returns to the squad following his own one-match ban.

Paris Saint-Germain probable starting XI:

Safonov; Zaire-Emery, Zabarnyi, Beraldo, L Hernandez; K Lee, Maylu, D Fernandez; Mbaye, G Ramos, Barcola

Brest probable starting XI:

Coudert; Zogbe, Chardonnet, Diaz, Guindo; Chotard, Magnetti, Tousart; Del Castillo, Ajorque, Lascary

Enrique is anticipated to implement significant rotations after the taxing midweek fixture in Munich, yet even a modified PSG squad should still possess extensive quality to overcome a struggling Brest side.

As such, another comfortable win for Les Parisiens seems plausible, especially given that they have recorded clean sheets in their last three encounters with the Pirates, who have also struggled to find the net away from home, failing to score in three of their last four away matches.
