Sheffield Wednesday vs West Bromwich Albion – News and Probable Lineups

In their final Championship fixture before their expected descent to League One, Sheffield Wednesday will host West Bromwich Albion at Hillsborough on Saturday for the season’s concluding match.

The home side remains at the bottom of the Championship standings, with one last opportunity to avoid a negative points total, while their opponents have recently secured their survival.

Match overview

Heading into the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday is prepared to conclude their three-year tenure in the Championship, having faced what seems to be an unavoidable relegation.

The 2025-26 season has been difficult for the Owls, who encountered off-field problems from the very beginning and entered administration in October, resulting in a total of 18 points deducted.

Since then, they have struggled to shake off a negative points tally, recording just a single league victory in September and currently enduring a record 37-match winless run in the football league.

During April, Henrik Pedersen’s team did demonstrate promising signs with three consecutive draws, including against champions Coventry City, but they have since suffered back-to-back defeats, with their latest outing resulting in a 4-1 loss against Oxford United; Will Grainger managed to reduce the deficit to 3-1 18 minutes from the end, only for Myles Peart-Harris to swiftly secure the match for the hosts.

Now standing at the bottom with -3 points, Sheffield Wednesday aims to uplift spirits and achieve their first home league victory of the season on Saturday as they look forward to resetting under new ownership and escaping administration this summer, before turning their attention to League One.

Their opponents are also seeking a positive conclusion to a challenging campaign, albeit having recently secured their place in the league.

West Bromwich Albion found themselves in danger of relegation when James Morrison took on the role of caretaker manager at the end of February, after unsuccessful tenures by Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay; since then, he has guided the team to safety.

Under his management over 11 matches, the Baggies have lost only once and accumulated 18 points, having previously moved away from the relegation zone with consecutive wins of 2-0 and 3-0 against Preston North End and Watford in April, extending their unbeaten run to nine games.

A two-point deduction brought them back into consideration with two matches to go, but Morrison’s squad managed to secure safety again last weekend, drawing against promotion-chasing Ipswich Town in a goalless match.

Currently sitting 21st, they are just two points away from 19th position. With Morrison now confirmed as permanent head coach for the 2026-27 season, West Bromwich Albion will look to finish the season strongly with an away victory this weekend.

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday continues to manage a lengthy injury list, with Di’Sho Bernard, Liam Cooper, Joel Ndala, Ike Ugbo, and George Brown set to miss the final match of the season.

Key midfielder Svante Ingelsson has also been absent for the last three fixtures, leading to Nathaniel Chalobah and Jaden Heskey partnering in midfield again, despite competition from Marvelous Nakamba.

In attack, Charlie McNeill and Jamal Lowe will both be eager to maintain their places alongside Jerry Yates, who has scored four Championship goals since his loan arrival at Hillsborough in January.

West Bromwich Albion remains without Krystian Bielik, Mikey Johnston, and Jed Wallace, all limited to recovery.

Chris Mepham has also not played since early February, while George Campbell will continue as Nathaniel Phillips’ partner in central defence, a partnership that has proven effective under Morrison.

Daryl Dike will hope to lead the line, although Josh Maja, Aune Heggebo, Isaac Price, and Karlan Grant are all contenders for attacking positions.

Sheffield Wednesday probable starting XI:

Charles; Palmer, Iorfa, M Lowe; Fusire, Heskey, Chalobah, Adaramola; McNeill, Yates, J Lowe

West Bromwich Albion probable starting XI:

O’Leary; Imray, Phillips, Campbell, Styles; Molumby, Diakite, Mowatt, Price; Dike, Maja

Sheffield Wednesday may play without the weight of pressure in front of a rare hopeful crowd, looking ahead to next season as they know a disappointing Championship campaign is concluding, but we still anticipate they will struggle against a revitalized West Bromwich Albion eager to extend their unbeaten streak until the season’s end.
