Torino vs Inter Milan – News and Probable Lineups

Just days after staging an incredible comeback to secure their place in the cup final, Inter de Milão will look to seal the Scudetto on Sunday evening as they face Torino in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri, who are already on the verge of becoming champions, would officially be crowned if they prevail in Turin and AC Milan fails to win against Juventus later in the day.

Match overview

Following a thrilling late comeback at San Siro, Inter advanced to another Coppa Italia final this past Tuesday, keeping their hopes alive for a 10th national cup.

With just 20 minutes remaining and looking like they were out of the contest, Cristian Chivu’s team turned it around against Como, ultimately winning 3-2 on aggregate to secure a spot in Rome.

The key players in that thrilling comeback were Hakan Calhanoglu, who scored two goals—both assisted by substitute Petar Sucic—before setting up Sucic for the decisive strike.

Chivu and his squad are now preparing to face Lazio in next month’s final at Stadio Olimpico, with aspirations for a rare domestic double.

Should they triumph this weekend, they will clinch the Italian title with four matches still to play, provided Milan cannot beat Juve back at San Siro, which seems probable.

Having secured a 3-0 victory over Cagliari last week, Inter has now won their last four matches, scoring at least three goals in each. Unlike last season’s sluggish conclusion, they seem to be hitting peak form.

As they head to Turin, the Nerazzurri also possess a remarkable away record this season, achieving 12 wins and only three losses in 16 league matches played away from home.

Moreover, past encounters heavily favor them: Inter has won their last three away fixtures against Torino, scoring a total of 6-0.

In fact, Torino has not won any of their last 13 top-flight clashes since January 2019, and they suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat in the earlier fixture this season.

On a more positive note, a recent coaching change has propelled them up the Serie A standings in recent weeks, and they are now virtually assured of avoiding relegation.

Under former manager Marco Baroni, the Granata had been facing a decline in the table, but his exit led to an immediate improvement.

Though they dropped points in their most recent match against relegation-threatened Cremonese, Toro currently sits comfortably in 12th place, having secured four victories from seven since Roberto D’Aversa took charge.

Three of those wins have come at home, giving D’Aversa a remarkable 100% record in Turin, yet their next opponents present a significant challenge.

Team News

Inter’s captain Lautaro Martinez remains out due to a thigh strain and will miss the match once again; however, his forward partner Marcus Thuram has returned to top form.

Thus, the French international—who has previously netted six goals in four encounters against Torino—should link up with either Ange-Yoan Bonny or Pio Esposito in the attack.

Besides Martinez, there is a possibility that Alessandro Bastoni might miss out due to an ankle injury, although he has not been officially ruled out yet.

It’s uncertain whether Chivu might rotate his squad following an intense cup match on Tuesday, but D’Aversa is expected to maintain the core of his Torino lineup.

A likely change could see key defender Ardian Ismajli return from suspension to replace Guillermo Maripan.

While veteran striker Duvan Zapata is anticipated to return to the bench, Tino Anjorin and Zakaria Aboukhlal remain sidelined due to injury.

Giovanni Simeone, likely to partner with Che Adams in the forward line, needs just one more goal to reach double figures for the first time since 2022; he has been on the scoresheet in his last three home matches.

Torino probable starting XI:

Paleari; Coco, Ismajli, Ebosse; Pedersen, Casadei, Gineitis, Obrador; Vlasic; Simeon, Adams

Inter Milan probable starting XI:

Sommer; Bisseck, Akanji, Augustus; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco; Thuram, Esposito

With little else to fight for, Torino is unlikely to hinder Inter’s pursuit of the title, and the Serie A champions-in-waiting could potentially wrap up the job this week.

The combination of their potent offense and Torino’s shaky defense suggests that all three points—and possibly the Scudetto—will be making their way back to Milan.
