Cagliari x Frosinone - prediction, team news, lineups

Frosinone has not won away at Cagliari since 2013, yet they head into this Saturday’s matchday 11 encounter at Unipol Domus as the anticipated favourites.

The newly promoted team has shown impressive form in their return to Serie A, currently sitting sixth in the league standings prior to another visit to a stadium where victory has eluded them for over a decade.

Match overview

The start of the 2026-27 season for Cagliari has been uneven, with the team facing a rollercoaster of results in the initial rounds.

Fabio Pisacane’s squad recorded four wins in their opening five encounters, encountering a predictable home loss to Inter de Milão, before drawing 1-1 against Juventus in round six.

That draw seemed like a positive result at first, but the Isolani have not managed to add any more points since, experiencing four straight defeats against Monza, Bologna, Roma, and Lazio, wherein they notably lost leads against both Roman teams.

These outcomes place Pisacane’s side in 12th position in the Serie A standings, although they could rise to eighth if Napoli, Bologna, Torino, and Genoa all drop points in their respective matches.

Nonetheless, achieving this would depend on the Sardinians putting an end to their league losing streak against a formidable opponent in good form.

Frosinone’s return to Serie A after a two-year absence introduced expected challenges, but the Canaries have thrived at this higher level of competition.

They showcased early signs of their potential during their opening-day loss to Juventus at Stadio Benito Stirpe, where the Old Lady secured a narrow 1-0 victory.

Only Napoli have managed to defeat Massimiliano Alvini’s team since then, with the Canarini achieving six wins from their subsequent nine fixtures, placing them in sixth position in the Serie A table ahead of matchday 11.

Their sole away league defeat occurred during last month’s 3-0 loss at the Maradona against Napoli, while the Ciociari have celebrated a 3-0 victory over Fiorentina and achieved satisfying draws at Genoa and Atalanta, the latter resulting in a thrilling 4-4 draw in Bergamo.

Nevertheless, there has been room for critique of Alvini’s squad, particularly regarding their inability to capitalize on the lackluster performances of both Genoa and Atalanta when facing them, with Daniele De Rossi’s team currently sitting in 15th place in the standings and the Bergamo side just two positions lower.

Nonetheless, they arrive for Saturday’s match aiming to secure their first away league win since August, which would also mark the end of their 13-year wait for a victory at Cagliari.

Team News

Adam Obert will be unavailable for this weekend’s match after receiving a red card for two yellow card offenses against Lazio in the previous encounter.

Alessandro Deiola and Roberto Gagliardini are both doubtful due to head and ankle injuries respectively; however, Alieu Fadera (thigh), Mattia Felici (knee), Riyad Idrissi (knee), and M’Bala Nzola (thigh) will all not feature.

With Nzola, who has scored two goals, absent, Daniel Maldini remains the only player who has netted more than once for the Sardinians this season and will look to add to his five goals against the opponents.

Antonio Raimondo had to be substituted after 30 minutes in Frosinone’s 2-0 win over Torino, and the top goalscorer is not expected to be available for the visiting side.

The absence of Raimondo is quite detrimental, given his eight goals constitute a third of the Canaries’ league total of 24; Daniel Birligea is expected to start, having recently scored twice in the 5-1 demolition of Lecce on October 29.

Florian Grillitsch is also likely to miss this match for the Canaries, since he has not played since September due to a thigh issue.

Cagliari probable starting XI:

Caprile; Ze Pedro, Mina, Rodriguez, Sugawara; Adopo, Romano; Koffer, Maldini, Fazzini; Mendy

Frosinone probable starting XI:

Palmisani; Oyono, Monterisi, Calvani, Bracaglia; Masini, Calo; Ghedjemis, Schmid, Kvernadze; Birligea

Raimondo’s absence eliminates a key goal source for Frosinone, though Birligea’s recent two-goal performance against Lecce indicates that the visitors still possess enough attacking strength to challenge their underperforming hosts.

Cagliari has repeatedly struggled to maintain leads during their four-match losing streak, and the Canaries are backed to finally achieve victory in Sardinia.
