On Sunday, Strasbourg aims to escape the relegation playoff zone in Ligue 1 by securing a win at Stade de la Meinau against Auxerre.
After a disappointing 3-0 loss to Rennes on matchday eight, the Alsatian club has fallen to 16th place, while Auxerre now holds a position three points ahead in 12th, drawing 1-1 with Le Mans.
Match overview
This autumn has been challenging for Strasbourg, who find themselves just two points above the automatic drop zone heading into matchday nine.
Hugo Oliveira and his team have lost four consecutive league matches and could face their fifth straight Ligue 1 defeat on Sunday, an occurrence not witnessed for a decade.
Out of their eight league matches so far this season, they have allowed multiple goals in six of them, and they are yet to secure a clean sheet domestically in 2026-27.
Strasbourg has not managed to win two out of three domestic home fixtures so far this season, despite scoring first in those two matches; their only victory at Stade de la Meinau came after they initially went behind to Lens (2-1).
After reaching the semi-finals of last season’s Conference League, the team has conceded the most goals in Ligue 1 after eight rounds (18) and has the fourth-lowest expected goals allowed in the league (15.7).
That said, Le Racing has a strong record against Auxerre in Alsace, having won their last five competitive home encounters and not losing to the Burgundy club in Strasbourg since 2004 (2-0).
Auxerre, under the management of Will Still, have experienced a rollercoaster campaign, finding themselves in better fortunes recently.
The former Southampton manager has guided his team to garner points in four of their last five league matches, transitioning from the relegation zone early in the season to a position five points clear of automatic relegation now.
This weekend, Still has an opportunity to achieve something his predecessor, Christophe Pelissier, could not last season—win two consecutive away matches in Ligue 1.
Auxerre ranks third for most possession in the final third per game this season (5.8), but they also commit the second most fouls on average in Ligue 1 (15.1).
Of the joint-league-high 18 goals conceded this season, 13 have occurred away from Stade de l’Abbe-Deschamps.
The AJA have struggled to score in four of their last five Ligue 1 affairs against Strasbourg, suffering a 3-0 defeat in this fixture last season.
Team News
Ismael Doukoure and Sebastian Nanasi are both unlikely to appear for Strasbourg this weekend due to injuries, while Fabio Balde is dealing with a muscle strain and Joaquin Panichelli is still on the mend from a cruciate ligament injury.
Additionally, Maxi Oyedele, Deivid Washington, Hermann Malonga, and Sam Amo-Ameyaw are all categorized as doubtful because of minor injuries.
For Auxerre, Remy Labeau’s status is uncertain due to a sore leg, Sekou Fofana has a groin issue, and Assane Diousse along with Bryan Okoh are recovering from cruciate ligament injuries, while Marvin Senaya and Telli Siwe are struggling with hamstring problems.
Cameron Archer netted the equalizer during matchday eight and currently leads the side with five goals in this competition.
Strasbourg probable starting XI:
Jorgensen; Antwi, Mitchell, Coulibaly, Bear; Diop, El Mourabet; Yassine, Sousa, Queen; Godo
Auxerre probable starting XI:
Nardi; Makosso, Tuanzebe, Akpa; Sy, Ahamada, Danish, Oppegard; Faivre, Loader; Archer
Despite Auxerre’s recent improvements, they have exhibited defensive vulnerabilities away from home throughout the season, which leads us to believe that Strasbourg may regain their winning form.
