Genoa xVenezia - prediction, team news, lineups

Genoa will face Venezia on Sunday as both teams aim to distance themselves from the relegation zone.

Currently, Genoa finds itself in 17th place in the Serie A standings, just one point above their rivals who are at the bottom.

Match overview

Having ended last season in 16th position, head coach Daniele de Rossi recognized that significant work was necessary to elevate Genoa back to mid-table safety in Serie A.

Beginning the season with three consecutive losses was not an ideal way to start, but context is key as those defeats came against Napoli, Lazio, and Como.

Following those initial matches, Genoa has gathered four points, the first being a comeback draw against Frosinone, and then securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Fiorentina after the international break.

Although a 2-0 loss to Roma last weekend marked their fifth defeat in seven outings, De Rossi’s squad seems to be improving.

Genoa has managed to score in their last three home games, and notably, half of the eight goals they conceded at Stadio Luigi Ferraris were during a 4-1 loss to Como.

On the other side, newly-promoted Venezia made the decision to dismiss Giovanni Stroppa following a streak of six consecutive losses, and this change has had the desired effect.

The hiring of Davide Nicola on October 14 was quickly followed by a 1-0 win over Napoli just three days later.

Despite having conceded 16 goals in six matches, Venezia managed to withstand the attacking prowess of the reigning Serie A champions to revitalize their campaign.

Two of Venezia’s three away matches have been against AC Milan and Atalanta BC, resulting in them conceding eight goals during these games on the road.

Nicola is quite familiar with Genoa, having had a managerial stint lasting 22 games between December 2019 and August 2020, during which he recorded eight victories and five draws.

Team News

Despite the defeat at Stadio Olimpico, De Rossi is unlikely to make drastic changes to his starting XI.

Milutin Osmajic, a former Preston North End forward, is currently their top scorer with three goals, and he played a key role in both goals during the Fiorentina match.

While Lorenzo Colombo will miss out due to injury, Alex Amorim made his comeback to the squad last time after recovering from an ankle issue.

Unless any new injury problems arise, Nicola is expected to stick with the effective 3-5-2 formation that worked against Napoli.

Akor Adams scored in that match, marking his second goal in three appearances, and he is likely to partner with John Yeboah in attack.

Thierry Correia’s fitness remains uncertain, and centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchup will likely continue to be absent.

Genoa probable starting XI:

Bijlow; Vasquez, Marmandalli, Ostigard; Ellertsson, Frendrup, Wiafe, Puczka; Messias, El Shaarawy; Osmajic

Venezia probable starting XI:

Stankovic; Jesus, Halhal, Moreno; Hainaut, Perez, Basic, Sohm, Haps; Yeboah, Adams

With both teams having achieved impressive victories since the international break, a contest between two sides gaining confidence is anticipated. While Venezia celebrated their win over Napoli, we predict that Genoa will capitalize on their home advantage to secure points and steer clear from relegation threats.
