Sporting Lisbon vs Famalicao – News and Probable Lineups

Aiming to maintain their title challenge at the top of the Primeira Liga, second-placed Sporting Lisbon will host Famalicao at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Saturday evening.

The Lions find themselves four points behind league leaders Porto, while sixth-placed Vila Nova are trailing the top four by seven points and are five points short of fifth-placed Gil Vicente.

Match overview

The title battle has become more competitive of late, with Sporting narrowing a seven-point gap to four after a 2–1 victory over Nacional on matchday 20, coinciding with the league leaders’ slip against Casa Pia.

Last weekend’s O Classico at Estadio do Dragao presented Sporting with an opportunity to further shrink the deficit; however, they were held to a 1–1 draw after Porto scored first, and Luis Suarez converted a rebound from a saved penalty late in the game.

This result halted Rui Borges’s side’s six-match winning streak across all competitions and underscored their difficulties against top-five teams, as all their points dropped in the league this season (D4, L1) have come against such rivals.

Conversely, the Lions have triumphed in all 16 Primeira Liga encounters with teams outside the top five, netting at least twice in 15 of those matches, indicating they may find little difficulty in overcoming their sixth-placed opponents again this weekend.

Sporting claimed a 2–1 win in the earlier fixture in Vila Nova, extending their winning streak over Famalicao to nine matches, and the two-time reigning champions will be looking to keep this record intact as they continue their title defense.

Like their hosts, Famalicao has also faced challenges against top-five rivals, suffering defeats in all five such league matches this season, including a heavy 5–0 loss to Gil Vicente a fortnight ago, although that’s their only setback in the last four fixtures.

This represents an improvement for the Vila Nova team, who had experienced four consecutive defeats — including an exit from the Taca de Portugal — prior to recent victories over Santa Clara (1–0), Tondela (3–0), and a 3–1 win against bottom-placed AVS last weekend.

Hugo Oliveira’s side has achieved nine wins in their 21 league matches this season (D5, L7), scoring 27 goals while conceding 20, though it remains uncertain how they will perform against a Sporting team that has the highest tally in the league with 55 goals and only 12 conceded.

Famalicao’s away form is another worry, having lost three of their last four Primeira Liga away games without scoring, although these losses make up their only defeats in 10 away matches at the top level this season (W4, D3).

Team News

Sporting’s head coach Borges faces a challenge in the attack, as Suarez is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards against Porto, while Fotis Ioannidis is still recovering from a knee ligament injury.

Centre-back Zeno Debast is also doubtful due to a similar issue and is expected to miss Sunday’s match, while winger Geny Catamo is contending with a muscle issue.

Geovany Quenda remains unavailable due to ongoing recovery in London following foot surgery, thus he will not participate.

For Famalicao, winger Oscar Aranda continues his long recovery from a knee injury, and forward Romeo Beney might miss his fifth consecutive match.

Right-back Rodrigo Pinheiro is also questionable as he has missed the last two games, while midfielder Mathias De Amorim is likely to return after serving a suspension last time out.

Sporting Lisbon probable starting XI:

Silva; Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo; Morita, Hjulmand; Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves; William

Famalicao probable starting XI:

Carevic; P Bondo, De Haas, Ba, Garcia; Van de Looi, Amorim; Dias, Sa, Sorriso; Elisor

Sporting could find themselves trailing by as much as seven points if Porto manages to secure a victory away at Nacional earlier in the day, meaning the Lions cannot afford to slip.

Nonetheless, the hosts are expected to have enough strength to secure all three points, supported by an impressive home record that has seen them win their last 12 matches at Jose Alvalade.
