Estoril Praia will welcome Maritimo on Sunday as they aim to secure their first victory in the Portuguese top division for the current season.
Currently, Estoril sits at the bottom of the Primeira Liga standings, while Maritimo is six points ahead in 14th place.
Match overview
Even though Estoril finished the previous season in 10th place, it concealed the difficulties the team experienced towards the end of last season.
Only managing to earn two points from their last eight matches of the 2025-26 season has unfortunately carried over to their first 10 fixtures of the 2026-27 season, producing the same point total.
A total of four points from 18 matches has resulted in multiple managerial changes, leading to Leandro Pires being appointed as the current caretaker manager.
Under-23 coach Sergio Raimundo oversaw the last match, which was a trip to Porto and ended in a straightforward 4-0 defeat against the league leaders.
With only five goals scored this season, Estoril has also fallen victim to a run of five consecutive defeats, conceding 12 goals in the process.
On the other hand, Maritimo has encountered three consecutive losses, with defeats against Porto, Vitoria de Guimaraes, and Santa Clara.
While they are currently six points above the relegation zone, Mitchell van der Gaag’s team is just one point clear of 17th place.
Considering their recent promotion, they are likely to be content with their current situation; however, they possess the league’s worst away defensive record, having conceded 12 goals in five matches.
That said, they can take some encouragement from narrowly losing 2-1 to Sporting Lisbon in the Taca de Liga, before ultimately succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against fourth-placed Santa Clara in their last match.
Team News
Pires is anticipated to implement several changes to the Estoril starting XI, with Jordânia Holsgrove among those expected to return.
Axel Camblan and Xeka might also be given chances, contingent upon the alterations made in the midfield.
Ricard Sanchez is also likely to return at right-back or right-midfield as Pires seeks a winning formula.
Meanwhile, Simo Bouzaidi may rejoin the Maritimo attack, potentially replacing Mons Bassouamina, whom he substituted for in the previous fixture.
Considering Maritimo performed admirably against Santa Clara, Van der Gaag may opt to refrain from making additional changes.
Vladan Danilovic, Yellu Santiago, and Maxime Dominguez are all projected to remain unavailable.
Estoril Praia probable starting XI:
Turk; Carvalho, Andreou, Ferro, Parente; Sanchez, Tsoungui, Holsgrove, Xeka, Peixinho; Lacximicant
Maritimo probable starting XI:
Vieites; Fernandes, Correia, Szalai; Juliao, Guzzo, Andrade, Henrique; Bouzaidi, Butzke, Tejon
Given the poor form both clubs are currently experiencing in the Primeira Liga, predicting the outcome of this fixture is challenging. Nonetheless, based on their superior goal record at the start of the top-flight season, we are leaning towards the visitors edging this tight contest.
