Feyenoord aims to keep their spot at the top of the Eredivisie standings when they encounter Heerenveen at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Although they are separated by seven points and six positions in the table, the home team heads into this fixture with considerable confidence, having won four consecutive matches, whereas the visiting side is on a quest for their first victory in five games.
Match overview
After the September/October international break, Feyenoord picked up where they left off, securing wins against AZ Alkmaar, Como, and Telstar, extending their winning run to five matches, a feat few expected given the challenges that followed.
However, losses in the Champions League to Real Betis and, most recently, Inter de Milão—alongside Eredivisie draws against PSV Eindhoven and Fortuna Sittard—have led to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad enduring four games without a win for the first time since January, when they failed to secure victory in six matches around the new year.
Despite their ongoing struggles, De Stadionclub still maintains a narrow advantage at the top of the league and must find a way to sort things out to preserve this lead. A loss would not only shatter the last remaining unbeaten record in the division but could potentially drop them into fourth place.
Since achieving three wins in a row from December 2021 to March 2024, Feyenoord has struggled against Heerenveen, failing to defeat them in their last two away encounters and experiencing a KNVB Beker elimination at the hands of the same opponents last season.
With only two goals netted in their last four matches, the visitors will need to rekindle their attacking form, which has so far averaged three goals per league game, only second to PSV’s 3.18 goals per match.
While their opponents’ achievements this season have largely stemmed from strong attacking play, Heerenveen can lay claim to being one of the most defensively sound teams in the Eredivisie after 11 matches.
Second only to Twente and Feyenoord in terms of the least goals conceded, Robin Veldman’s side demonstrated their defensive strength in a 1-0 win over NEC last time out, achieving a league-high fifth clean sheet.
De Superfriezen have now won in four consecutive competitive fixtures for the first time since September 2017, and their earlier rough patch, which saw them go five matches without a win, is now merely a distant recollection.
Only three teams in the division have accrued more home points than Heerenveen’s 10, despite their modest tally of eight goals in six games. Facing an opponent that has not recorded a clean sheet in six matches, they will be optimistic about increasing that total.
Having opened the scoring in five of their last six matches, the visitors have developed a habit of starting matches strongly, a trend mirrored by Feyenoord, who have scored nine of their 33 goals in the opening half hour.
Team News
Levi Smans returned to action for Heerenveen with an assist, and the hosts are in excellent shape, boasting a fully fit squad for the first time in a while.
Dylan Vente’s goal against NEC marked his third in four matches, bringing his total to five goal contributions this season.
Jordânia Bos, Jakub Moder, and Bart Nieuwkoop continue to be sidelined for Feyenoord due to knee injuries, while Gijs Smal is out with an ankle issue.
Thomas Beelen and Jeremiah St. Juste are also missing from the visitors’ lineup, with Beelen still waiting for his first appearance since July 2025.
Anis Hadj Moussa has emerged as his team’s standout attacker this season, and even though he had a quiet performance against Inter midweek, he remains a player to watch.
Heerenveen probable starting XI:
Clover Jack; Braude, Kersten, Willemsen, Zagaritis; Linday, Courtens; Trenskow, Smans, Rivera; Vente
Feyenoord probable starting XI:
Ernst; Lopez, Marmol, Watanabe, Read; Targhalline, Vanhoutte, Zechiel; Valente, Ferri, Hajj Moussa
Feyenoord currently seems to be vulnerable, suggesting that this may be an opportune moment for an in-form Heerenveen team to try and pull off an upset this weekend.
Nonetheless, strong teams are characterized by their ability to rebound from difficult phases, and it is anticipated that Feyenoord will strive to get back to winning ways on Sunday.
