PSV xHeerenveen - prediction, team news, lineups

After an 18-day break for international matches, the 2026-27 Eredivisie campaign returns on Friday when PSV Eindhoven host Heerenveen at the Philips Stadion.

The home side aims to achieve their fifth straight victory over their opponents as they seek to recover from their first league loss, which occurred just prior to the break.

Match overview

Following a sequence of five wins, PSV faced a setback after a 2-2 draw with Fortuna Sittard on matchday one, culminating in a 3-2 loss to FC Twente at De Grolsch Veste on September 20.

This result ended an impressive eight-match winning run for Peter Bosz’s team across all competitions and marked the first time they lost an Eredivisie game from a winning position since suffering a 3-2 defeat to Ajax in November 2024.

Currently sitting in third place behind AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, the Rood-witten would leapfrog to the top of the table with a win against Heerenveen, a feat they have achieved in four consecutive meetings and six of the last seven encounters.

As the saying goes, ‘attack wins you games, but defence wins you titles’. In pursuit of their fourth consecutive league championship, PSV needs to bolster their defensive efforts.

They still have not managed a clean sheet this season, and only Fortuna Sittard has allowed more goals (14) among teams competing for European positions.

With their Champions League match against RB Leipzig set for four days later – and several players just returning from international duty – PSV must find the right balance to avoid losing ground in the title race.

In contrast, Heerenveen kicked off their season with a win against FC Twente in August. However, they went five matches without victory (D3, L2) before returning to form with a strong 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam last time out.

Under pressure, manager Robin Veldman celebrated his side’s biggest win margin since his tenure began, climbing to 10th in the league after previously being at risk of entering the relegation zone during the break.

Having come close to European qualification in previous seasons, De Superfriezen are once again aiming for a European berth, and clashes against top-tier teams like Friday’s opponents present an excellent chance to demonstrate their capabilities.

Heerenveen is among the three teams, alongside PEC Zwolle and Cambuur, that has yet to score an Eredivisie goal in the first 15 minutes of any match this season.

Nevertheless, they could exploit PSV’s early vulnerabilities, as the reigning champions have conceded first in five of their last six matches.

Moreover, Heerenveen must remain vigilant for the entire duration of the match, as PSV has shown a knack for scoring late, achieving a league-high six goals in the final 15 minutes this season.

Team News

Ricardo Pepi managed only 10 minutes in the defeat to Twente and is not anticipated to feature against PSV.

Lutsharel Geertruida and Paul Wanner picked up minor injuries while on international duty with the Netherlands and Austria respectively, casting doubt on their availability for Friday’s match.

Kiliann Sildillia, Alassane Plea, Adamo Nagalo, Sam Lammers, and Jerdy Schouten are all confirmed to be unavailable, though Mikkel Bro Hansen is set to return after a brief injury absence.

Twenty-five-year-old Mees Hilgers remains a considerable distance from returning to action due to a knee issue sustained just before the previous season commenced.

Fellow defender Mats Egbring is also out, and Dirk Proper will miss a third consecutive match after making six continuous appearances since transferring from NEC.

Jacob Trenskow has contributed to nine goals in his last 10 matches for the visitors dating back to pre-season, making him a player to keep an eye on.

PSV Eindhoven probable starting XI:

Coward; Mauro, Bishop, Flamingo, Dest; Sano, Fernandez; Van Bommel, Till, Perisic; Average

Heerenveen probable starting XI:

Clover Jack; Zagaritis, Willemsen, Kersten, Braude; Smans, Linday; Rivera, Courtens, Trenskow; Vente

PSV encountered a setback in their last outing at Enschede, but resilience is a characteristic of great teams that allows them to bounce back from adversity.

We expect the defending champions to deliver a commanding performance and convey to their rivals that they are determined to hold on to their title fiercely.
