Arouca xMoreirense - prediction, team news, lineups

Arouca aims to build on their opening win from last weekend as they host Moreirense at Estadio Municipal de Arouca this Sunday for the second matchday of the new Primeira Liga season.

Vasco Seabra’s team began the season with a narrow 1-0 victory against Vitoria de Guimaraes, while Moreirense ended their own opening fixture in a 2-2 stalemate at home against Braga.

Match overview

Ivan Barbero’s decisive strike in the 53rd minute was enough to secure the win against Vitoria de Guimaraes last weekend, a result rooted in a solid defensive performance and an opportunistic offense, given Arouca managed only four shots compared to 24 from their opponents.

This victory positions Arouca among the four teams earning maximum points on the opening matchday, alongside Porto, Gil Vicente, and newly promoted Maritimo, while also extending their impressive form from last season.

Arouca has secured victories in their last three competitive encounters, having concluded the previous season with wins in their final two matches against Gil Vicente and Tondela, both by a score of 3-1, ensuring an improvement from 12th place the previous term to finishing 8th.

In their pursuit of back-to-back wins, Seabra’s squad will also look to capitalize on home field advantage, having won three of their last four league games at the Estadio Municipal during the last season and amassing 25 points from 17 home games.

On the other hand, Moreirense can reflect on their own determination, having fought back from a deficit twice to earn a point against Braga, but they will be keen to secure their first victory of the season.

Vasco Botelho da Costa’s team has much to prove after their aspirations for European qualification fell apart the last season, winning only four of their last 17 league games (D4, L9) and finishing seventh overall.

This Sunday’s match also presents an early examination of Moreirense’s capabilities on the road, having concluded the last season without a win in their final five away fixtures (D2, L3), resulting in 16 points from 17 away league matches last term.

However, the visitors have historically performed well in their recent travels to Arouca, winning four of their last seven competitive visits (D2, L1), although they did suffer a 1-0 loss at home to the Lobos in their most recent meeting back in March.

Team News

Arouca’s success last weekend came with a price, as they may have to face Moreirense without Javier Sanchez, who exited the match with an injury during the second half.

Diogo Monteiro, who stepped in for Sanchez in that match, received a red card in stoppage time and will be suspended for this encounter, leaving the Lobos with a reduced defensive lineup.

On the other hand, Barbero is anticipated to maintain his role as the central attacker, while Hyun-Ju Lee is likely to support the Uruguayan from a deeper position.

Moreirense did not report any new injuries following their opening fixture, although Dinis Pinto is still recovering from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since March.

New signing Joao Veloso is hoping for a starting spot after coming off the bench to net a last-gasp equalizer in his debut, though it wouldn’t be surprising if Rodri retains his place in midfield.

Alexandre Duville-Parsemain also made a significant impact in his debut, providing an assist for Nile John’s goal in the eighth minute and is expected to lead the attack once more.

Arouca probable starting XI:

De Arruabarrena; Esgaio, Popovic, Fontan, Flores; Fukui, Van Ee; Trezza, Lee, Djouahra; Barbero

Moreirense probable starting XI:

Ferreira; Kiko, Batista, Monteiro, Santos; Rodri, Liberato, John; Landerson, Duville-Parsemain, Vieira

Given Arouca’s early-season confidence and their home performance record, Seabra’s team should have a solid foundation to achieve consecutive victories, especially considering Moreirense’s difficulties in away matches.
