The Vancouver Whitecaps are set to keep their lead in the Western Conference by claiming a victory on Thursday as they restart the MLS season at Soldier Field against the Chicago Fire.
Prior to the league pause, the Fire climbed to third in the Eastern Conference following a 2-1 win over Toronto, while the Whitecaps are currently tied with the San Jose Earthquakes for the top position in the West after a 4-2 win over San Diego FC.
Match overview
Returning after more than a month away from league play, the Fire will be looking to continue their momentum from their last match.
Gregg Berhalter’s squad aims to secure their fourth consecutive victory in this competition on Thursday which could narrow the gap to Inter Miami to just two points in the conference standings.
They have a chance to earn maximum points in back-to-back MLS matches at Soldier Field for the first time since April (three matches).
After completing 14 rounds, they currently hold 26 points, which is seven points greater than they had at the same point last season.
In 2026, they have recorded five home victories in the regular season, surpassing their total from the previous campaign.
The Fire have triumphed in all three of their MLS matches this year against Canadian teams, scoring a total of seven goals during this period.
The Whitecaps enter this stage of the season vying closely for the Supporters Shield, standing just a point behind Nashville SC in the overall standings.
Jesper Sorensen’s team has conceded the second-fewest goals in the league this season (12), yet they have allowed at least one goal in their last six league matches.
Currently, they are on an unbeaten streak of three matches across all competitions, accumulating a total of nine goals in that time.
In the recent three domestic outings away from home, the Caps secured maximum points in two, netting a total of seven goals during that stretch.
Vancouver boasts a perfect record against Eastern Conference teams in 2026, having kept clean sheets in both contests.
They remain unbeaten in their last three visits to the Windy City in all competitions, winning each of the last two away matches against the Fire.
