Telstar xUtrecht - prediction, team news, lineups

On Sunday afternoon, two teams facing different trajectories will clash at BUKO Stadion, with Telstar welcoming FC Utrecht.

The hosts are entering the game on the back of three consecutive defeats, while the visitors look to maintain their unbeaten streak, aiming for five matches without a loss across all competitions.

Match overview

When the final whistle blew at Stadion de Goffert in August, Telstar secured a 2-1 victory over NEC, leading many to anticipate a turn in fortunes. Unfortunately, that match remains the only highlight in what has been a challenging season for them.

Henk Brugge’s squad has not been able to achieve victory in any of their latest nine league fixtures (D3, L6), and they faced an early exit from the KNVB Beker at home against Eerste Divisie team Almere City, who won 2-0.

Prior to that, De Witte Leeuwen had netted seven goals across three matches, seeming to have resolved their attacking difficulties, but their recent defeat indicates there is still much to rectify defensively and offensively.

Despite their rocky start to the season, Telstar is only two points shy of safety. A win this weekend could boost their position to as high as 14th in the standings, depending on the outcomes for PEC Zwolle and Sparta Rotterdam against ADO Den Haag and Groningen, respectively.

While the Telstar management appears inclined to support Brugge for the time being, soon effective results are imperative to prevent the hosts from needing another managerial change in a little over three months.

The first of those changes occurred in July, when Anthony Correia left Telstar to assume control at Utrecht. As the 44-year-old gears up for his return, he is demonstrating why he was chosen by his new club.

After a shaky start with two draws and no wins in his first two matches, Correia has led his team to four victories in the next seven fixtures (D2, L1). However, their solitary defeat during this stretch – a 5-0 thrashing by Feyenoord just prior to the international break – was a significant setback.

Only three clubs have garnered more points than Utrecht in the last five matchdays, highlighting the scale of their revival.

A further win this weekend would enhance their momentum in a campaign that is gradually becoming focused on a push for European qualification, with just three points between them and seventh-place Heerenveen.

Utrecht secured four points from their two league encounters with Telstar last season, as the teams met for the first time since 1978, and De Domstedelingen are now unbeaten in their last seven matches against them.

The visitors on Sunday have netted a league-leading seven goals in the final quarter of matches, while no other team has conceded more than Telstar’s seven goals during that same time frame. Thus, the closing moments of the game may offer the away side their greatest chance to seize control.

Team News

Telstar has no injury concerns heading into Sunday’s match, providing Brugge with a complete squad to select from as he seeks to implement a successful strategy.

After going goalless for the first seven matches, Tyrone Owusu has hit form in the last three league games, raising his tally for the season to four, and he is definitely a player to keep an eye on.

Long-term absentees Miliano Jonathans and Noah Ohio continue to be sidelined due to ACL injuries, with neither expected back before the new year.

While not as serious as the aforementioned injuries, Victor Jensen and Kevin Paredes are also unavailable due to knee issues, and Alonzo Engwanda is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Greek goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has been absent for the last three matches, and with a return on Sunday appearing unlikely, Sergio Padt is expected to start in goal.

Telstar probable starting XI:

Koeman Jr; Caschili, Valk, Soualhia, Peersman; Shenkman, Rossen; Martha, Owusu, Brouwer; Thorisson

FC Utrecht probable starting XI:

Padt; Zagre, Panagiotou, Didden, Vesterlund; Agougil, Van Overeem; Cathline, De Wit, Alarcon; Van Duijn

Given his connection to Telstar, Sunday’s fixture poses both a tactical and psychological challenge for Correia, who has started to turn things around at Utrecht.

We expect an exciting match with chances for both teams, but predictions favor Utrecht coming out on top.
