Venezia x Inter Milan - prediction, team news, lineups

In Serie A, the current league leaders Inter de Milão travel to Venezia for their upcoming fixture at Stadio Penzo on Wednesday evening.

After a thrilling comeback last weekend, Inter managed to reclaim their top position, whereas the Lagunari faced their seventh defeat of the season.

Match overview

The reigning champions remained unbeaten in Serie A, but Inter had to overcome a deficit for the fifth time in eight league fixtures when they played Fiorentina on Sunday.

Returning to the top of the table, just above unexpected contenders Lazio, the Nerazzurri secured a 2-1 victory, scoring twice in the dying moments at San Siro.

After initially trailing 1-0, they faced repeated obstacles from Viola captain David De Gea, only to finally equalize when Marcus Thuram netted his eighth attempt of the match.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Thuram was fouled in the box, and Piotr Zielinski confidently converted the resulting penalty kick, meaning Inter has only dropped two points in Serie A thus far this season.

Notably, they are performing seven points better compared to the same stage last year, a season in which they went on to claim the Scudetto under Cristian Chivu.

Before they engage in the Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan, followed by a Champions League encounter with Feyenoord, Chivu’s side must first travel to Venice, where they have achieved victories in their last two visits, both without conceding a goal.

Including a previous 5-1 defeat in the Coppa Italia to Inter last year, in which Thuram scored twice, Venezia has lost all of the last five encounters against the club.

Furthermore, they are entering this match amidst a poor sequence of results, having gathered only three points since making their return to Serie A.

Back in Italy’s top division after promotion last spring, the Lagunari have already part ways with Giovanni Stroppa, bringing in survival specialist Davide Nicola, who managed an unexpected win against Napoli in his first match in charge.

This initial “new manager bounce” quickly faded, however, as Venezia suffered a 1-0 loss to Genoa last weekend, with Mikael Ellertsson scoring a stunning goal against his former team.

Conceding more than two goals on average per game, the Arancioneroverdi are now set to face the formidable attacking strength of Inter, which might instill some apprehension among their supporters.

Team News

Following his praise for Thuram’s recent performances, Chivu mentioned that the French forward might be given a rest during the midweek match, in light of two important fixtures ahead.

With their captain Lautaro Martinez still unavailable due to injury, it’s likely that Ange Bonny and Pio Esposito will team up in attack.

Inter’s injury list includes Luis Henrique and Benjamin Pavard, in addition to English players John Stones and Curtis Jones; the latter is closest to making a return, although he might not travel to Stadio Penzo.

Venezia is anticipated to welcome back their captain, Gianluca Busio, though they still have several absentees.

Marin Sverko, Bartol Franjic, and Andrea Adorante are all in recovery from injuries, while wing-back Thierry Correia’s fitness remains uncertain.

Nicola’s 3-5-2 system is expected to feature John Yeboah and Nigerian international Akor Adams, who has netted twice in his last four league matches.

Venezia probable starting XI:

F. Stankovic; Schingtienne, Halhal, Moreno; Hainaut, Perez, Basic, Sohm, Haps; Yeboah, Adams

Inter Milan probable starting XI:

J. Martinez; Bisseck, Akanji, Augusto; Spence, Sucic, A. Stankovic, Zielinski, Dimarco; Bonny, Esposito

While Inter continues to face challenges in European competitions, they have achieved their best start in Serie A since 2017, frequently turning matches around after falling behind.

Even with possible rotations from Chivu, this may not pose an issue on Wednesday, as struggling Venezia is unlikely to pose a threat to the Scudetto holders.
