With each team currently riding a streak of three consecutive victories, tensions will peak when Torino takes on Como this Tuesday evening.
Coming off a win against Manchester United, the Lariani notched another success over the weekend, while Toro is enjoying its best Serie A run in seven years.
Match overview
Following a historic midweek win in the Champions League, Como quickly secured back-to-back league wins on Saturday afternoon during a match against Sassuolo at Stadio Sinigaglia.
After defeating United 4-1 just a few days earlier, the Lariani made multiple changes to their starting XI yet still managed to secure a victory, with standout forward Tasos Douvikas scoring two goals.
In their third season back in Italy’s top flight, Como is breaking records, and their club-high total of 17 points from eight matches keeps them in the hunt for the top three positions.
As they attempt to reach the Champions League knockout round, Cesc Fabregas and his youthful side may even be looking to challenge for the title.
To remain in contention with Lazio, Roma, and reigning champions Inter de Milão, they will need to garner more points on away turf.
Last season at Torino, they were level at halftime before netting four goals in the second half, strolling to a 5-1 victory in Turin.
Two months later, Torino faced an even tougher match in the return leg, where Douvikas scored twice in a dominant 6-0 victory for Como.
At that stage, the Granata were uncomfortably close to the relegation zone, but under new head coach Ignazio Abate, they are aiming for a much higher finish this season.
Despite a rough start to his tenure, Torino has managed to gather 13 points from their last six matches.
Following their international break with a home win against Udinese, Abate’s squad scored three unanswered goals against Parma and celebrated a rare hat-trick against Monza.
The last time Torino achieved three consecutive league wins in a single season was in 2019, but they finally secured this elusive trifecta by defeating their opponents 3-2 on Friday night.
Kian Fitz-Jim’s first Serie A goal set the stage at Stadio Olimpico Grande, where Toro will now face a significantly tougher challenge against Como.
Team News
Fabregas rotated his squad on Saturday, most notably giving Nico Paz a rest while allowing first starts for Samuele Ricci and Willy Kambwala, and more adjustments are likely on Tuesday.
Como’s injury list includes Trevoh Chalobah, Jesus Rodriguez, and Assane Diao, while Mattia Liberali has been dealing with a shin issue.
Unless Moise Kean is ready to make his return, Douvikas may need to continue leading the attack; he has scored in four consecutive matches, including a brace against Sassuolo.
Torino might not have the same level of attacking depth, but all three of their forwards – Che Adams, Giovanni Simeone, and Sandro Kulenovic – have managed to score at least twice this season.
Moreover, wing-back Rafik Belghali currently boasts four goal contributions in Serie A this term, while captain Nikola Vlasic recently ended an 11-match goal drought.
The hosts could see the return of Emirhan Ilkhan (adductor) and Niccolo Fortini (thigh) from injuries, but veteran defender Ricardo Rodriguez (thigh) is not expected back until next week.
Torino probable starting XI:
Perri; Comert, Ismajli, Coco; Belghali, Fitz-Jim, Mandragora, Vlasic, Cacciamani; Adams, Simeone
Como probable starting XI:
Butez; Smolcic, Ramon, Kempf, Valle; Perrone, Milla; Addai, Paz, Baturina; Douvikas
This match poses a stiffer challenge for Como than initially anticipated, given Torino’s newfound rhythm under their new coach, making them a more formidable force in attack.
Nevertheless, having made significant investments over the past three years, the visitors can rely on a strong bench – a potential game-changer.
