Strasbourg vs Paris FC – News and Probable Lineups

RC Strasbourg Alsace is seeking to continue their campaign in Ligue 1 as they prepare to face Paris FC at the Stade de la Meinau on Sunday.

The home side is still active in four competitions, necessitating squad rotation to keep players refreshed for each match, while Paris FC is solely focused on keeping a safe distance from the relegation zone this season.

Match overview

Strasbourg made significant progress towards the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League with a 2–1 away win against HNK Rijeka on Thursday. However, they need to quickly redirect their attention back to domestic competition as they prepare to host Paris FC in Ligue 1 at the Stade de la Meinau on Sunday.

This fixture comes during a demanding period for Strasbourg, who are facing a packed schedule and will be playing their fourth match in just 13 days. Having already participated in three games in nine days across various competitions, the Alsace club has had to rely heavily on squad rotation to keep up the momentum in the league.

Strasbourg finds themselves in a relatively solid position in the league standings, currently placing eighth in Ligue 1 with 36 points and firmly in the hunt for European qualification spots. However, a series of recent draws has hindered their ability to climb the table more effectively.

Three of their last six encounters have ended in draws, including a recent goalless stalemate against AJ Auxerre in their last league match, with previous draws against title contenders RC Lens and Olympique de Marseille.

Despite their grueling schedule, Strasbourg is in decent form overall, remaining unbeaten in six matches while they continue to balance their league commitments with European and domestic cup competitions.

However, exhaustion may soon become an issue as the schedule intensifies, suggesting that head coach Martin O’Neil and his staff will need to manage gameplay and rotations carefully ahead of Sunday’s match.

With nine matches left in the current season, Le Racing is five points away from the European League and Conference League qualification places, making it essential for them to regain consistency and embark on a sustained run of victories if they aim to return to European competition next season.

On a positive note for the visitors, the earlier match this season was competitive, with Strasbourg narrowly winning 3–2. Furthermore, the Alsace team has only lost three of their last 15 encounters against Paris FC, achieving seven wins and five draws in that time.

The threat of relegation has become a serious issue for Paris FC following a disappointing series of results, which led to a managerial change. The club dismissed Stephane Gilli and appointed Antoine Kombouare in February in an attempt to stabilize the season.

The 62-year-old manager, often referred to as the “French Sam Allardyce,” has earned a reputation as a specialist in preserving club positions in the top division, having previously accomplished survival with teams like Valenciennes FC, Dijon FCO, and FC Nantes. He has already instilled a sense of stability in a short duration since taking over.

Kombouare had a positive start, winning his debut match in charge away from home, leading Paris FC to a 1–0 victory over OGC Nice on March 1, thus ending the club’s six-match winless streak across all competitions.

He narrowly missed out on achieving a second win last weekend against Olympique Lyonnais, as his team was denied victory by a dramatic 96th-minute penalty, which led to a 1–1 draw against one of the most formidable teams in Ligue 1 since the year’s start.

Paris FC arrives in Alsace looking to build on that promising performance. They currently sit 13th in the table, maintaining a buffer above the relegation zone thanks to a series of resilient displays in the past weeks.

The capital club has experienced only two defeats in their last six matches across all competitions, while their draw against Lyon showcased their ability to stand up against tougher opposition.

Their away performance has also shown improvement, with the team remaining unbeaten in their last three away matches domestically, conceding only two goals during that period.

Team News

O’Neil made five changes to the lineup that drew against Auxerre last weekend for Strasbourg’s victory over Rijeka in the Conference League on Thursday. With the second leg planned for next week, the manager needs to manage his squad with care to prevent any additional injuries.

Strasbourg is already facing multiple injury problems, including striker Emanuel Emegha, who is out with a muscle fiber tear, defender Aaron Anselmino recovering from a hamstring strain, and winger Diego Moreira sidelined due to an abductor issue.

Paris FC also added two more names to their injury list last weekend, as both Rudy Matondo and Marshall Munetsi had to leave the field with suspected injuries during the draw with Lyon.

Other sidelined players for the visitors include Pierre-Yves Hamel with a calf strain, Sofiane Alakouch with a knee issue, along with Remy Riou, Lamine Gueye, and Hamari Traore.

On a brighter note, the trio of Otavio, Thibault De Smet, and Ilan Kebbal are all back from their respective suspensions.

Strasbourg probable starting XI:

Penders; Doue, Doukoure, Omobamidele, Chilwell; Oyedele, Ouattara, Enciso; Yassine, Godo; Fofana

Paris FC probable starting XI:

Trapp; Coppola, Mbow, Camara, Sangui; Lees-Melou, Marchetti, Ollila; Simon, Icon, Crassus

Strasbourg’s immediate focus may be on completing the task against Rijeka in the Conference League next week, so squad rotation is probable for Sunday’s match, which might present a challenging league encounter against an opponent striving to distance themselves from the relegation zone.

Paris FC came close to claiming victory against Lyon last weekend, and with the “new manager bounce” still in effect under Kombouare, the visitors could potentially secure another favorable outcome in Alsace.
