Sporting Lisbon vs Porto – News and Probable Lineups

The latest chapter of O Classico is set for Tuesday at Estadio Jose Alvalade, featuring Sporting Lisbon against Porto in the first leg of their Taca de Portugal semi-final clash.

Both teams come into the match in excellent form, each winning their last three fixtures since they played to a 1–1 draw at Estadio do Dragao on February 9.

Match overview

Sporting reacted perfectly to Porto’s earlier victory on Friday, as Rui Borges’s side comfortably defeated Estoril Praia at the Alvalade that evening, with a brace from Luis Suarez and a late goal from Daniel Braganca keeping the Lions in second place, four points behind the league leaders.

This result extended the two-time reigning Primeira Liga champions’ unbeaten run to ten matches across all competitions (W9, D1) since their Taca da Liga semi-final elimination in January, a streak that also secured them direct access to the last 16 of Europe’s top competition, where they will face first-timers Bodo/Glimt.

During this timeframe, Sporting had to rely on extra time to edge past AVS 3–2 in the Taca de Portugal quarter-finals, previously overcoming Pacos de Ferreira and Santa Clara within regulation, with a dominant 3–0 triumph over Marinhense being their only straightforward outing in the cup so far.

In pursuit of a third consecutive Portuguese Cup final, after lifting the trophy for the 18th time last season, the holders aim to assert dominance in this semi-final fixture, backed by a 14-match winning run at home across all competitions.

Indeed, Sporting has only failed to win twice in their 19 matches at Jose Alvalade this season, although their sole defeat in that period occurred in a 2–1 loss to Porto, serving as a sobering reminder ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.

While that contest remains Porto’s sole success in the last five meetings between the teams (D2, L2), they will draw encouragement from their past victories over the Lions in their prior three Taca de Portugal matches, including a penalty triumph in the 2023–24 final, where the Blue and Whites secured the trophy for the third consecutive year and 20th time overall.

Last season’s campaign ended in disappointment for them as they were ousted in the last 16, but they have bounced back strongly this year by dispatching Celoricense (4–0), Sinterense (3–0), Famalicao (4–1), and rivals Benfica (1–0) to secure their position in the semi-finals.

Seeking their first league and cup double since 2021–22, Porto maintained their four-point advantage at the Primeira Liga summit with a 3–1 win at home over Arouca on Friday, with William Jose converting a penalty in stoppage time before Terem Moffi capped off the victory with his inaugural goal for the club.

Additionally, 13 victories from 17 away fixtures in all competitions (D2, L2) give the Dragons further reason for optimism heading into Tuesday’s fixture, even if their last three away matches have only produced one win (D1, L1).

Françasco Farioli’s side have also faced challenges finding the net during recent away games, not scoring more than once in any of their last five such outings, yet their defensive solidity cannot be contested, as they have kept three clean sheets during this period.

Team News

Sporting will still be without centre-back Zeno Debast and Chelsea-bound winger Geovany Quenda due to ligament and foot injuries, respectively, while midfielder Giorgi Kochorashvili may miss a fifth consecutive match.

Striker Fotis Ioannidis and right-back Ricardo Mangas were both absent from the previous matchday squad, making their availability for Tuesday uncertain.

Including his brace on Friday, Suarez has now netted 17 goals in his last 15 matches for Sporting, and he also scored a late penalty at Estadio do Dragao during that stretch, with the Colombian forward looking to maintain his impressive form here.

Meanwhile, Porto is dealing with injuries in their attack, as strikers Samu Aghehowa and Luuk de Jong are both sidelined for the season due to knee injuries.

In defense, the Dragons will be without Nehuen Perez (Achilles tendon) and Martim Fernandes (heel), while veteran centre-back Thiago Silva is expected to miss a third consecutive match due to physical discomfort.

Sporting Lisbon probable starting XI:

Silva; Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo; Hjulmand, Morita; Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves; Suarez

Porto probable starting XI:

D Costa; A Costa, Kiwior, Bednarek, Sanusi; Rosario, Veiga, Froholdt; Pepe, Moffi, Pietuszewski

Predicting the outcome of a Classico of this scale is always a risk, but the support of the home crowd could play a crucial role.

With Sporting currently unstoppable at the Alvalade and Porto facing difficulties on their travels, the hosts are well-positioned to secure a narrow win in what looks set to be a tightly contested match.
