Santa Clara vs. Gil Vicente – News and Probable Lineups

Santa Clara is looking to secure their third win in a row to boost their fight against relegation as they host Gil Vicente at Estadio de Sao Miguel this Saturday night for round 27 of the 2025-26 Primeira Liga season.

The visitors, meanwhile, aim to break a four-match winless stretch while trying to revive their hopes of securing a spot in European competitions.

Match overview

Santa Clara found themselves without a win for 11 league matches between December 15 and March 1, earning only four points from 33 available and dropping from 11th to 16th place, putting them in a precarious position regarding relegation.

After a 2-0 victory against Vitoria de Guimaraes on March 8, head coach Petit’s squad followed up with a narrow 1-0 win over AFS, marking their first successive league victories this season.

With both Casa Pia and Nacional facing difficulties recently, the upturn in form for Os Acorianos couldn’t come at a better time. They now lie 14th in the Primeira Liga standings, three points clear of the relegation playoff and an additional three points ahead of automatic relegation to the Segunda Liga.

With only six teams having conceded fewer than Santa Clara’s 31 goals this season, it is reasonable to point to their struggles largely stemming from an ineffective attack, having scored just 23 goals which averages out to less than one per game.

Although Santa Clara suffered a 1-0 defeat to Gil Vicente in the previous encounter back in November, they triumphed in the three matches before that and will be eager to secure a positive outcome in front of their supporters, especially after snapping a six-game winless streak at home in their last match.

Gil Vicente ended 2025 with a streak of six matches without a win, which set a negative tone going into the new year; however, four wins and one draw in their first six games of 2026 quickly lifted spirits.

Currently sitting fourth in the league after a mid-February win over Braga, Cesar Peixoto could have hoped to lead his team into European territory in his first complete season as head coach.

Regrettably, Os Gilistas have not managed to win any of their last four matches, with the last two concluding in a draw, including a second consecutive 2-2 result against Alverca, when Kaiky Naves found the net with a last-gasp equalizer.

Gil Vicente is now four points behind Braga in fourth place, with an extra game played, meaning they must act quickly if they wish to qualify for continental competition next season; failing to secure three points this weekend would be a major setback.

Having netted the opener in five of their last seven matches, Saturday’s visitors will look for a quick start against hosts who have conceded first in seven of their last nine fixtures.

Team News

Santa Clara will be without left-back Matheus Araujo, who is out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Forward Gabriel Silva netted the crucial goal against AVS but had to leave the match due to injury, making him unavailable for Sunday’s fixture.

For Gil Vicente, Santiago Garcia and Ze Carlos are suspended due to accumulating yellow cards, while Mohamed Bamba and Jonathan Mutombo are sidelined with injuries.

Agustin Moreira finally scored his first goal for the visitors against Alverca and will aim to maintain that scoring form.

Santa Clara probable starting XI:

Baptist; SOARES, Venancio, Lima, Romao; Serginho, Ferreira, Klismahn; LOPES, Fernando, Torrao

Gil Vicente probable starting XI:

Lucao; Konan, Buatu, Elimbi, Hevertton; Esteves, Caceres; Moreira, Fernandez, Murilo; Varela

Gil Vicente has been without a clean sheet in their last six matches, conceding 11 goals while also finding the net 10 times during that stretch.

Thus, an engaging contest with goals on both sides is expected, likely resulting in a close win for the home team.
