Samsunspor vs Rayo Vallecano – News and Probable Lineups

On Thursday evening, Turkish club Samsunspor will host Spanish team Rayo Vallecano at the Samsun 19 Mayis Stadyumu, aiming to gain an edge in the first leg of their Conference League round-of-16 matchup.

The home side has aspirations of reaching the quarter-finals of a major European tournament for the first time in their history. However, they face a somewhat more seasoned Rayo side that notably reached the UEFA Cup’s last eight during the 2000-01 season.

Match overview

Samsunspor’s uneven performance in the league phase pushed them into the knockout play-off round, but the Red Lightning easily dispatched Macedonian team Shkendija, winning 5-0 on aggregate, which included a commanding 4-0 win at home.

European competition has provided a better solace for the Turkish team than their domestic league as their recent Super Lig form has been underwhelming. Thorsten Fink’s squad currently sits eighth in the standings, 14 points behind the European qualification positions.

The hosts come into this fixture following a 3-2 loss to Fenerbahce in the league, in which they conceded twice late in the game to drop points, a defeat that ended a five-match unbeaten streak across all competitions (3W, 2D) during which they hadn’t allowed a single goal.

Strong defensive organization has been a crucial aspect of Samsunspor’s European campaign so far, with the Turkish side having kept five clean sheets in their eight matches in this season’s Conference League.

This match will mark the first competitive encounter between Samsunspor and a Spanish club, while Rayo Vallecano is also facing Turkish opposition for the first time in their history.

In contrast to the hosts, Rayo reached the round of 16 directly without having to go through a playoff, finishing fifth in the league phase with a record of four wins, one draw, and one loss.

The Red Sashes also featured one of the most prolific attacks in that round, netting 13 goals, with only AEK Athens (14) scoring more than Inigo Perez’s team.

However, the Spanish side has shown weaknesses when playing away from home, claiming just one win during their league phase travels (D1, L1), while allowing five of the seven goals conceded in the competition during those matches.

Their away struggles are not confined to Europe; Rayo’s 1-1 draw against Sevilla in La Liga last weekend extended their winless streak on the road to five matches across all competitions, with three losses and two draws during that streak.

Team News

Samsunspor is currently facing a significant injury crisis, with Jaures Assoumou sidelined due to an unspecified injury, while Bedirhan Cetin (knee) and Afonso Sousa (ankle) are also unavailable.

The home side is further hindered by the absence of several other players, including Ali Badra Diabate, Saikuba Jarju, Yalcin Kayan, Emre Kilinc, Elayis Taxn, Efe Berat Toruz, and veteran full-back Zeki Yavru.

Despite these difficulties, Samsunspor retains a potent attacking presence in Marius Mouandilmadji, who is in excellent form, currently topping the Conference League Golden Boot race with seven goals in eight appearances in the tournament.

Yunus Emre Cift and Rick van Drongelen are both one yellow card away from suspension and would miss the second leg if they are cautioned in this match.

Rayo Vallecano has a few issues of their own, with Pathe Ciss recovering from a knee injury sustained during the recent win over Oviedo, while Diego Mendez remains a long-term absentee as he continues rehabilitation.

Carlos Martin is also listed as out for upcoming games, further reducing the visitors’ attacking options.

Goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, Isi Palazon, Oscar Valentin, and Oscar Trejo are all at risk of suspension, meaning a caution here would exclude them from the return leg.

Samsunspor probable starting XI:

Whisker; Yuksel, Schachter, Drongelen, Thomasson; Makoumbou, Ntcham; Ndiaye, Holse, Mendes; Marius

Rayo Vallecano probable starting XI:

Battle; Ratiu, Lejeune, Mendy, Pacha; Valentin, Gumbau; Akhomach, Palazon, Perez; De Frutos

Samsunspor has been quite solid defensively in Europe, and their robust home support could pose challenges for the Spanish visitors.

Nonetheless, Rayo has more experience at this stage of continental competition and possesses enough attacking quality to trouble the hosts.

With both teams likely to approach the first leg with caution, a close contest seems probable, and the points could be shared before the crucial return leg in Spain.
