Queretaro xClub Leon - prediction, team news, lineups

Queretaro aims for a third straight victory when they face rivals Club Leon at the Estadio Corregidora this Sunday.

The home side enters this match in sixth place, sharing 13 points with their opponents in seventh.

Match overview

Queretaro is positioned within the top eight of the Liga MX standings, having secured four wins, one draw, and two losses in their first seven fixtures of the Apertura.

Two of those wins came in their first three matches before shifting their focus to the Leagues Cup, which features teams from both MLS and Liga MX.

Queretaro struggled during that competition, losing to FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders, before managing a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles, only to miss out on a bonus point in the penalty shootout that followed.

Esteban Gonzalez seemed to carry some of that disappointment into Liga MX, as they earned just one point from two matches after the league resumed.

Nevertheless, they have regained their winning form, recording consecutive away victories with a 3-1 win over Atlas and a narrow 1-0 triumph against Tijuana.

Now they are eager to claim another home win against Leon following a 2-0 victory against them in their last meeting at the Estadio Corregidora back in March.

In contrast, Leon has been active in the knockout stages of the League Cup after finishing the Liga MX league phase at the top with three victories.

They decisively defeated Real Salt Lake 3-0 in the quarter-finals, but their quest for the trophy ended with a 2-0 loss to Toluca in the semi-finals.

A narrow victory over Club America in the third-place playoff eased the sting of that semi-final exit before they turned their attention back to league play.

After a 3-1 defeat to Pumas, Javier Gandolfi’s team got back on track, winning 2-0 at home against Atletico San Luis, bolstered by a second-half brace from Diber Cambindo.

Now they will embark on this away fixture looking to snatch their first win against Queretaro in an away setting since they triumphed 3-0 in 2018.

However, claiming victory will not be straightforward for a team that has managed only one win in four away matches during the Apertura (D1, L2).

Team News

Queretaro needs to evaluate the condition of Jean Unjanque, who has missed the last two matchday squads.

Assuming no new injury issues arise, Gonzalez might continue with the same lineup that has delivered two consecutive victories against Atlas and Tijuana.

Ali Avila is anticipated to lead the attacking front for Queretaro as he looks to add to his three goals this season.

On the visitors’ side, Luis Valadez is expected to miss his sixth consecutive game due to a foot injury, while Angel Estrada may not be ready to return after a long injury layoff.

Sebastian Vegas is likely to return to the left side of the defense after completing a one-match ban.

There may also be a shift in midfield, with Fernando Beltran hoping to start after having come on as a substitute to provide an assist in the win over Atletico San Luis.

Queretaro probable starting XI:

Allison; Duarte, Reyes, Abascia, Parra; Garcia, Homenchenko; Gimenez, Coronel, Victor; Avila

Club Leon probable starting XI:

Garcia; Moreno, Romana, Guevara, Reyes; Cortizo, Echeverria, Rodriguez, Beltran, Arcila; changing

Recent meetings at the Estadio Corregidora have seen two of the last three matches end in draws, and given the points shared between the teams in the Apertura, it is plausible that this contest might end similarly.
