PSV Eindhoven vs FC Twente – News and Probable Lineups

FC Twente’s aspiration for Champions League qualification comes down to a crucial match in the Eredivisie as they visit Philips Stadion to take on PSV Eindhoven in the season’s final fixture on Sunday afternoon.

While PSV has secured a third successive league title, the Tukkers find themselves only two points clear of fourth-placed NEC Nijmegen in the standings and must secure maximum points this weekend to guarantee their place in the Champions League playoffs.

Match overview

After barely clinching the league title last season, finishing just one point ahead of Ajax, PSV Eindhoven has raced to the Eredivisie championship this time, sealing the trophy with five games left to play.

Coached by Peter Bosz, the team has notched up 26 wins and three draws, accumulating 81 points leading into the weekend’s final match, and with a comfortable 19-point margin over second-placed Feyenoord, they are poised to establish the largest winning margin in Eredivisie history.

Following a 2-2 draw against Ajax on May 2, where they lost their lead after conceding a goal in the 92nd minute at the Johan Cruijff Arena, PSV easily overcame Go Ahead Eagles last Sunday, winning 4-1 at De Adelaarshorst.

Goals from Ricardo Pepi, Paul Wagner, and a brace from seasoned forward Ivan Perisic ensured that the Rood-witten achieved their eighth victory in nine visits to De Adelaarshorst since March 2014, while Mathis Suray scored from the penalty spot for Go Ahead Eagles in the 26th minute.

As illustrated by their recent win, PSV’s impressive league campaign has been once again fueled by their attacking prowess, being just four goals away from reaching the 100-goal milestone for the third consecutive season.

Conversely, FC Twente, who are also vying for a Champions League spot, made a statement last weekend with a decisive 4-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam at De Grolsch Veste.

After a goalless first half, the hosts increased their efforts after the break, with Thomas Van den Belt scoring twice in quick succession, swinging the momentum their way, before Kristian Hlynsson and Daan Rots added to the tally to complete an impressive second-half performance.

Twente is now unbeaten in 22 of their last 23 Eredivisie encounters, having recorded four wins and two draws from their last six matches, placing them in a strong position for the UCL playoffs following NEC Nijmegen’s stumble in a 2-1 loss to Groningen last weekend.

Finishing sixth in the league last season, John van den Brom’s squad has accumulated 58 points from 33 matches, sitting in third place, just two points ahead of Nijmegen, who share the same goal difference (23).

While Twente requires a win this weekend to secure their own fate and clinch a top-three finish, they face the challenging task of overcoming an opponent who has won their previous seven encounters, a streak that goes back to September 2022, when they narrowly lost 2-1 at De Grolsch Veste.

Team News

PSV Eindhoven will be without the Dutch duo of midfielder Jerdy Schouten and 21-year-old Ruben van Bommel, both currently recovering from knee injuries.

Ismael Saibari has played a key role in PSV’s title-winning campaign with 15 goals and eight assists, but he will miss Sunday’s matchup due to a muscle injury sustained against Sparta Rotterdam in April.

Brazilian defender Marco Junior did not participate in the game against Go Ahead Eagles and remains doubtful for this weekend’s finale, while American full-back Sergino Dest is anticipated to step in.

For Twente, first-choice goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was absent against Rotterdam last Sunday and will also miss the trip to Philips Stadion.

Indonesian international Mees Hilgers continues to be sidelined due to a serious injury sustained back in August and will not contribute to this weekend’s fixture.

PSV Eindhoven probable starting XI:

Kovar; Sildillia, Flamingo, Gasiorowski, Dest; Wanner, Veerman; Bajraktarevic, Til, Perisic; Pepi

FC Twente probable starting XI:

Tyton; M Rots, Nijstad, Lemkin, Van Rooij; Van den Belt, Zerrouki; Orjasaeter, Hlynsson, D Rock; Lammers

While Twente can take satisfaction in their current form, they require just one victory to secure a top-three finish, and we anticipate them to put forth a tremendous effort at the Philips Stadion this weekend.

PSV can afford to relax after an impressive title campaign, but although they possess the individual talent to succeed, Twente has also proven dangerous offensively and may just outscore the hosts in another exhilarating match.
