Mônaco xLille - prediction, team news, lineups

Both Mônaco and Lille have the opportunity to temporarily take the top spot in Ligue 1 with a victory in matchday eight as they face each other at Stade Louis II to commence the Sunday fixtures in the French league.

As the two teams head into this match, they find themselves locked in a five-way tie for first place, with Les Monegasques slipping to fifth after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Lorient, while Lille sit just above them having drawn against Brest 1-1.

Match overview

The extended break this fall for the international window may not have been ideal for Mônaco.

Before the Ligue 1 season paused in September, Filipe Luis’s squad was on top of the league, remaining unbeaten in their initial five league matches and only dropping points once during that stretch.

However, the Principality club has since fallen from the summit and will aim to avoid matching their longest winless streak of the season (three matches) on Sunday.

Despite a slight slump in league form, this side boasts a perfect record in the Conference League, scoring a total of five goals across their two League Phase matches.

Additionally, they have not experienced a defeat at Stade Louis II this season, having conceded one goal or fewer in four of those matches, including a 3-0 victory over last season’s Europa League finalists Freiburg on Thursday.

Les Monegasques might be at risk of losing successive matches in this competition for the first time since May.

Lille, on the other hand, is also facing a minor slump, entering this weekend on a winless run of three matches in all competitions.

Davide Ancelotti’s squad has struggled defensively in Europe, losing all three of their Champions League group stage matches and conceding a total of 10 goals during the League Phase.

This sharp contrast highlights their solid defensive performances in Ligue 1, where they have allowed the fewest goals in the league as they head into matchday eight (five), having kept two clean sheets in their three domestic matches away from home.

Lille is among three European teams without a point in the League Phase of this season’s Champions League, and on Sunday, they could experience consecutive winless results in Ligue 1 for the first time since beginning the year with four straight losses.

Throughout 2026, Lille has maintained a perfect record at home when scoring the opening goal in this competition, achieving six clean sheets during that stretch.

Recently, Les Dogues have held the upper hand against Mônaco, having won their last three encounters in Ligue 1, while suffering only one defeat to Les Monegasques in the Principality this decade (1-0 in 2024).

Team News

Mônaco might be without Eric Dier on Sunday due to muscle tightness, and Stanis Idumbo’s participation is uncertain due to injury.

Paris Brunner, currently the team’s leading scorer in Ligue 1 with four goals, was the decisive factor in their Conference League victory on Thursday, with Lamine Camara and Ansu Fati contributing late goals while Lukas Hradecky secured his first competitive clean sheet since late August.

For Lille, Tiago Santos’s fitness is in doubt due to a knock, while Ayase Ueda is dealing with a foot injury, Ethan Mbappe Lottin is unsure due to ankle pain, and Hamza Igamane has been ruled out with a torn cruciate ligament.

Soriba Diaoune scored twice in their 4-2 defeat against Galatasaray during Champions League action this week, while Olivier Giroud salvaged a point for them by converting a penalty against Brest last Saturday.

Mônaco probable starting XI:

Hradecky; Vanderson, Sane, Salisu, Nazinho; Camara, Zakaria; Minamino, Fati, Golovin; Brunner

Lille probable starting XI:

Author; Srdanovic, Ngoy, Nianzou, Perraud; Perrin, Bentaleb, Andre; Harladsson, Giroud, Onal

Despite the attacking prowess of both teams, encounters between them rarely yield a high goal tally, often characterized by tightly contested matches.

With both sides on short rest, a draw may be seen as a satisfactory outcome given their demanding recent schedules.
