The Moldovan national team will look to secure their first points in Nations League C during the 2026-27 season on Tuesday, as they host the Faroe Islands at Stadionul Zimbru.
Currently at the bottom of their four-team group with no points, they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia on Saturday, while the Faroe Islands managed a 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan the same day, placing them third with one point.
Match overview
Moldova has no excuses for their loss to Slovakia, particularly as they could only register a single shot on target throughout the match.
This marked the sixth occasion in their last seven matches that Moldova has conceded at least two goals, extending their run without a clean sheet to 16 games.
Within these 16 matches, Tricolorii suffered defeats on 12 occasions, although it’s worth noting that they have drawn two of their last three games.
Head coach Lilian Popescu may be frustrated with the team’s inability to secure wins; however, he can take solace in the fact that they’ve netted more goals in their last four matches (five) compared to just four in the previous nine outings.
Moldova’s most recent home game ended in a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria in June, after having lost all five of their previous encounters on home soil.
The Faroe Islands performed admirably against Kazakhstan, limiting their opponents to just one shot inside the penalty area from open play, though they will be disappointed to have relinquished their lead in the 15th minute.
The visitors’ draw does not diminish what has been a fruitful spell, as they have won six of their last fixtures, matching their total from the previous 34 matches.
Head coach Eydun Klakstein’s squad have achieved four clean sheets across their last nine games, but they have failed to score more than once in six of those fixtures.
The Faroe Islands will be eager to prevent a second successive loss to Moldova, while a victory would grant them two wins from three encounters.
The visitors have alternated between wins and losses in their recent away matches, securing three victories in their last five travel games.
Team News
There’s no indication that Moldova will change from their three-man defence, so it’s anticipated that Iurie Iovu, Vladislav Baboglo, and Mihail Gherasimencov will form the backline.
Midfielders Nikita Motpan, Vadim Rata, and Victor Stina could support forwards Nicky Clescenco and Petru Popescu.
Regarding the Faroe Islands, the likely trio in the attack consists of Aki Samuelsen, Petur Knudsen, and Hanus Sorensen.
Geza David Turi is expected to make his 11th cap for the national side, partnering Joannes Bjartalid in a double pivot.
The two are set to play in front of centre-backs Odmar Faero, Gunnar Vatnhamar, and Andrias Edmundsson.
Moldova probable starting XI:
Celeadnic; Iovu, Baboglo, Gerasimencov; Forov, Motpan, Rata, Stina, Reabciuk; Clescenco, Popescu
Faroe Islands probable starting XI:
Lamhauge; Faero, Vatnhamar, Edmundsson; Danielsen, Turi, Bjartalid, Agnarsson; Samuelsen, Knudsen, Sorensen
Given the Faroe Islands’ recent consistency, they are likely to be considered the favorites ahead of Tuesday’s match.
While Moldova has shown improvement in their attacking play, they have often come up short in matches and may struggle against the Faroe Islands.
