On Saturday, two teams vying for European qualification in the Bundesliga will face off at MEWA Arena, as Mainz 05 welcomes Werder Bremen.
Die Nullfunfer aims to secure their third victory in four matches, whereas Die Werderaner will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak to six contests.
Match overview
Urs Fischer revitalized Mainz after taking charge last December, and now the team aspires to qualify for competitions on a continental stage.
Currently, Die Nullfunfer are positioned fifth in the Bundesliga with 10 points from six matches, just four points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich.
Last weekend, Fischer’s team bounced back from a disappointing 4-3 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen to achieve a 1-0 win over Schalke 04, with Phillip Tietz breaking the promoted team’s 13-month undefeated run at home.
This victory also allowed Mainz to establish a new record for the club, marking their fifth consecutive away win in the league.
Nonetheless, beneath that strong away form lies a concern, as Die Nullfunfer have yet to claim a win at MEWA Arena this season, having lost twice and drawn once in three Bundesliga home fixtures.
On the other side, Werder manager Daniel Thioune also joined mid-season last year, managing to retain the club’s status in the top flight before pushing forward in the 2026-27 campaign.
Die Werderaner have encountered a significant injury crisis early in the season but currently sit commendably in eighth place in the Bundesliga with nine points, just one point behind their opponents.
This strong start has largely been fueled by striker Niclas Fullkrug, who has netted six goals in his last five league matches, alongside winger Marco Grull, who has provided five assists in the current German top flight.
Fullkrug made headlines earlier this month with a call for greater respect from the media, a sentiment echoed by head coach Thioune after the West Ham United loanee scored a brace in the 2-2 comeback against SC Paderborn last weekend.
As they prepare for the matchup against Mainz, Werder possess a cautious optimism, recognizing their vulnerabilities on the road, but they must overcome their own struggles away from Weserstadion to secure a win.
Team News
Mainz head coach Fischer confirmed that goalkeeper Robin Zentner (hand), center-back Dominik Kohr (ankle), attacking midfielder Otto Ruoppi (knee), and striker Silas (leg) will all miss the match on Saturday.
In light of these absences, Alexander Schwolow is expected to start in goal, guarded by a defensive trio comprising Kacper Potulski, Stefan Posch, and Danny da Costa.
Up front, Sheraldo Becker and Phillip Tietz are likely to form the attacking partnership, supported by midfielder Nadiem Amiri.
On the Werder side, they are navigating a long injury list particularly in midfield, missing Jens Stage (thigh), Senne Lynen (groin), and Skelly Alvero (calf).
In their absence, Ludovit Reis and Youri Regeer are set to start in a double pivot behind Chuki, who will work alongside striker Nicolas Fullkrug – the in-form 33-year-old is guaranteed to take the lead considering Justin Njinmah (thigh), Salim Musah (thigh), and Keke Topp (ACL) are all unavailable.
Moreover, left-backs Moussa N’Diaye and Felix Agu remain sidelined due to respective groin and calf injuries, meaning Olivier Deman is expected to fill in on the left side of the defense alongside Amos Pieper, Marco Friedl, and Arthur.
Mainz 05 probable starting XI:
Schwolow; Potulski, Bosch, Da Costa; Caci, Sano, Lee, Amiri, Mwene; Becker, Tietz
Werder Bremen probable starting XI:
Hein; Arthur, Friedl, Pieper, Deman; Regeer, rice; Dinkci, Chuki, Grull; Full jug
Mainz has not been particularly convincing on their home ground, though they are certainly capable of scoring two goals this weekend.
Werder have shown resilience this season, and with both Fullkrug and Grull in outstanding form, they could emerge with a point on Saturday.
