This Friday, Lille will aim to continue their strong start to the season as they host Paris Saint-Germain at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in their Ligue 1 opening match. Lille began their campaign with a 2-0 victory against Angers, while PSG managed to salvage a 2-2 draw against Rennes in their first fixture.
Match overview
Under the guidance of Davide Ancelotti, Lille kicked off the season on a positive note, becoming one of only five teams in the French top division to secure a win in their first match last weekend.
This week, they aim for a fifth consecutive win in their home opener for Ligue 1, having conceded only one goal during this streak.
Lille has not experienced a loss in a home match during August since they were defeated 7-1 by PSG in 2022.
However, they have not won any of their last three Ligue 1 matches at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, scoring only once in that period.
The Northern French team has the opportunity to start a domestic season at 2-0 for the second time in the last decade, last achieving this at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
In 2026, Les Nordistes have suffered just one home defeat in this competition when they scored in the second half, the last occurrence being in a 3-0 victory over Lens in April.
PSG’s start to the Ligue 1 campaign was not particularly impressive, but their ability to bounce back and secure a point is commendable.
It marked the first instance this year where Luis Enrique’s squad earned a point after conceding the first goal in a match.
If they do not win this matchday, they may match their longest winless streak from the previous season (two matches), whereas they haven’t dropped points in their first two Ligue 1 games since the 2023-24 season.
So far this season, PSG has not allowed a single goal in the second half across all competitions and has managed to score only once in the first half.
Les Parisiens can extend their unbeaten competitive streak against Lille to 11 matches on Friday, including scoring three or more goals in six of those encounters.
Team News
Hamza Igamane will be sidelined for Lille this week due to a torn cruciate ligament, while Basar Onal made his Ligue 1 debut in the first match.
Olivier Giroud and Tiago Santos both scored in the first half against Angers, and Berke Ozer recorded four saves to maintain a clean sheet.
For PSG, Nuno Mendes will be serving a suspension following his red card in the Trophee des Champions, and Ousmane Dembele along with Desire Doue are expected to miss this match due to injury.
Ferran Torres scored twice to secure a point for his new team on Sunday, becoming the first PSG player to score a brace in his inaugural competitive match for the club since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2012.
Lille probable starting XI:
Ozer; Saints, Ngoy, Alexander, Perraud; Sahraoui, Mbappe; Mukau, Haraldsson, Strap; Giroud
Paris Saint-Germain probable starting XI:
Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Hernandez; Vitinha; Zaire-Emery, Neves; Akliouche, Torres, Kvaratskhelia
Despite PSG not having their top players available at the moment, their depth and resilience should enable them to secure a favorable outcome on Friday.
