Barcelona vs Sevilla – News and Probable Lineups

Barcelona aims to secure their fourth consecutive win in Spain’s top division when they host Sevilla on Sunday afternoon.

Hansi Flick’s team currently leads the La Liga standings, holding a four-point advantage over Real Madrid in second place, while Sevilla is positioned 14th, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Match overview

Barcelona heads into this fixture following a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup at St James’ Park.

Although it wasn’t their finest performance, the Catalan side finds themselves in a solid position to finish strong at home next week and secure a quarter-final berth.

Having been knocked out in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona is focused on their La Liga ambitions, currently four points ahead of Real Madrid at the top.

Flick’s squad was surprised by Girona in league play in mid-February but has bounced back with victories over Levante, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao.

Earlier this season, Barcelona suffered a shocking 4-1 loss to Sevilla at Estadio Ramon, yet they have won seven of the last eight encounters, including a 5-1 rout in the corresponding match during the 2024-25 season.

Sevilla has not managed to win an away match against Barcelona since January 2010 in the Copa del Rey, and they haven’t prevailed at Camp Nou in La Liga since December 2002, highlighting the challenge they face in this match.

Los Nervionenses, who finished 17th in last season’s La Liga, have only recorded one defeat in their past eight league outings, showcasing a turnaround in form.

Matias Almeyda’s squad will come into this matchup following draws with Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, their only loss coming against Mallorca at the beginning of February.

Sevilla’s record for this season includes eight wins, seven draws, and 12 losses from 27 league matches, leaving them with 31 points in 14th place, six points above the relegation zone.

On their travels, Los Nervionenses have been fairly resilient, accumulating 15 points from 13 matches, and they will certainly feel more rested than their opponents going into this match.

Team News

Barcelona faces a fitness boost ahead of the game, as both Lamine Yamal and Eric Garcia are expected to be available for selection.

Yamal missed training on Thursday due to discomfort but returned on Friday, while Eric Garcia, who was absent against Newcastle due to muscle fatigue, has also participated in training.

Andreas Christensen (knee), Jules Kounde (hamstring), Alejandro Balde (hamstring), and Frenkie de Jong (hamstring) will not feature, but Gavi returned to the bench against Newcastle.

Changes from the European encounter are likely, with Marc Casado potentially coming in to refresh the midfield, and Ferran Torres could return to the attack.

For Sevilla, Peque Fernandez (ankle) and Marcao (knee) are ruled out of the match, while Ruben Vargas (hamstring) and Neal Maupay (hamstring) will undergo late fitness tests.

Vargas has only featured once since late November due to a hamstring problem but is back in training and could be included in the squad at Camp Nou.

Additionally, there might be a role for Isaac Romero in the attacking lineup, while Jose Angel Carmona could be brought in for defensive solidity on the left side.

Barcelona probable starting XI:

J Garcia; Araujo, Cubarsi, E Garcia, Martin; Married, Pedri; Yamal, Fermin, Raphinha; F Torres

Sevilla probable starting XI:

Vlachodimos; Azpilicueta, Nianzou, Gudelj, Rooms; John, Agoume, Horse, Carmona; Adams, Rosemary

Sevilla are currently managing to avoid many losses, and while Barcelona may have an eye on next week’s match with Newcastle, we still anticipate Flick’s side securing a crucial three points this weekend.
