In an effort to keep their flawless start to the Primeira Liga season going, reigning champions Porto are set to host a struggling Estoril side at the Estadio do Dragao on Saturday evening.
The Dragons currently lead the Portuguese top-flight, having won all nine of their opening matches, placing them five points ahead, while the Canaries sit at the bottom of the table, trailing safety by five points and still in search of their first league win.
Match overview
Porto’s return to the Primeira Liga title after a three-year hiatus last season has been marked by an impressive start to their title defense, securing all 27 points available and marking their best league campaign opening since 1939-40.
Much like in 2025, during Françasco Farioli’s inaugural season, the Dragons are building their title challenge on a robust defensive structure, allowing only four goals – the fewest in the league – despite facing some defensive uncertainties.
A recent 1-0 win over Gil Vicente ended a two-match losing streak that followed back-to-back defeats in the Champions League to Real Betis and PSV, and marked the Blue and Whites’ first clean sheet in eight games across all competitions.
Porto showcased that defensive strength midweek, with a completely reshuffled squad securing a 1-0 victory against Academico de Viseu in the Taca da Liga quarter-finals, marking Farioli’s 50th win from 67 competitive matches in charge.
With a Champions League clash against Napoli approaching next week, the Dragons will be eager to maintain their domestic supremacy and have every reason to feel confident against a team they have defeated in their last four encounters.
Estoril approaches this fixture aiming to reverse their misfortunes, having lost their previous four league matches, including a home setback of 3-1 to Moreirense last weekend, making them the only team yet to register a Primeira Liga win this season.
A large part of the Canaries’ issues has arisen from a lack of attacking prowess, managing only five league goals, which is among the lowest in the division, while conceding three times that number.
Leandro Pires thus faces a considerable challenge to enhance his team’s offensive output ahead of his second league match at the helm, having taken over following Vasco Matos’s dismissal in mid-October.
Although Estoril pulled off a penalty shootout triumph against lower-tier side Salgueiros in their latest away match in the Taca de Portugal, the trip to the Dragao presents a greater hurdle, especially given they have lost all four league games on the road this season.
Team News
Porto is anticipated to be without William Gomes, who is recovering from an ankle injury, while Vasco Sousa remains sidelined as he continues rehabilitation from a broken fibula.
Oskar Pietuszewski is dealing with a minor thigh muscle issue and is considered doubtful for the encounter on Saturday, while former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling will require assessment after sustaining a knock during the cup match against Academico.
Farioli made extensive changes during the midweek victory over the Viseu club, and players like Diogo Costa, Jan Bednarek, and Jakub Kiwior are expected to return to the starting XI.
Estoril is still missing Israel Salazar and Fabricio Garcia, both of whom are recovering from knee ligament injuries.
Additionally, the Canaries may again be without key forward Yanis Begraoui, who has missed the last three encounters.
Porto probable starting XI:
D Costa; A Costa, Bednarek, Kiwior, Sanusi; Froholdt, Rosario, Veiga; Sainz, Samu, Pepe
Estoril Praia probable starting XI:
Robles; Ferro, Tsoungui, Sintes; R Sanchez, J Carvalho, Holsgrove, Jurisic; Guitane, Camblan, Omerovic
Porto’s perfect league record, defensive resilience, and recent success in this matchup position the hosts as strong favorites to secure another three points, particularly against an Estoril team still in search of its first league win this season.
