With a victory over Lens, Lille could temporarily ascend to the top of Ligue 1 on Friday as they host their opponents at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on matchday nine.
After a 1-1 stalemate against Mônaco last weekend, Les Nordistes currently occupy third place in the standings, sitting two points clear of Lens, who are eighth after registering a comeback 2-1 win against Paris FC.
Match overview
Following another strong start on the eighth matchday, Lille was unable to maintain their momentum in the Principality, dropping points in consecutive league matches for the first time this season.
Davide Ancelotti’s side has not secured victory in two Ligue 1 matches during the 2026-27 season after scoring first, resulting in a loss of four points.
However, they remain only two points behind Paris Saint-Germain for the top position in the table and could surpass them with a win coupled with a surprising victory for Le Havre on Friday.
Since starting the season unbeaten in their initial four Ligue 1 matches, Lille has faced difficulties, winning just one of their last six competitive fixtures while conceding a total of seven goals across their Champions League defeats against Arsenal and Galatasaray.
On Friday, Lille will be keen to end a two-match winless streak at home in all competitions, having conceded five goals during that time.
Les Dogues have the opportunity to extend their home winning streak against Lens in the French top tier to five matches, conceding only once in that period.
In domestic play, Lens appears to have turned their fortunes around under new management, securing three consecutive league victories since Yannick Cahuzac took over.
A further win on Friday would mark their longest winning streak in Ligue 1 this year and temporarily elevate them to second place in the standings.
This positive domestic form stands in stark contrast to their recent performances in the Champions League, where they have suffered back-to-back losses in the League Phase with a combined score of 5-0.
A victory this Friday would enable Lens to record consecutive Ligue 1 victories away from Stade Bollaert-Delelis for the first time in 2026.
Lens has conceded at least one goal in every away match this season, with five games in which they allowed multiple goals.
Les Sang et Or are seeking to achieve just their second away win against Lille this decade, having previously triumphed 2-1 in 2022.
Team News
For Lille, a foot injury is likely to keep Ayase Ueda on the sidelines, while Tiago Santos and Osame Sahraoui are both dealing with knocks, and Hamza Igamane is sidelined due to a cruciate ligament tear.
Tanguy Nianzou will also miss out this week after receiving a straight red card in the second half against Les Monegasques on matchday eight.
Ethan Mbappe Lottin found the net during the opening half of that match, placing him among a five-way tie for the team’s top scorer with his second goal in this competition.
At Lens, Ismaelo Gabiou is recovering from knee surgery, while Jonathan Gradit and Abdallah Sima may be unavailable due to leg injuries.
A cruciate ligament tear will prevent Maik Nawrocki from participating on Friday, and Jhoanner Chavez is nursing a sore thigh, while Odsonne Edouard could also be absent due to a minor injury.
Florian Thauvin and Thorgan Hazard made an impact in their last outing, scoring in the second half to lead the team to a comeback victory against Paris FC, with Hazard netting his first domestic goal for the club.
Lille probable starting XI:
Ozer; Srdanovic, Ngoy, Alexander, Perraud; Andrew, Bentaleb; Lottin, Perrin, Muck; Giroud
Lens probable starting XI:
Riser; Abdulhamid, Baidoo, Todibo; Aguilar, Bulatovic, Haidara, Udol; Thauvin, Sotoca; Ivanovich
While Lens is currently in solid form domestically, they will encounter a team with significantly greater attacking strength than what they have faced in their previous matches, leading us to believe the home team will regain their winning momentum.
