Mainz xB. Leverkusen - prediction, team news, lineups

Bayer Leverkusen is set to visit Mainz 05 at Mewa Arena this Saturday in what could prove to be a vital contest for a position in the Bundesliga’s top four.

Each side currently holds seven points from 12 in the league, with Leverkusen sitting in fifth place, just ahead of Mainz, who occupy the sixth position, based on goal difference.

Match overview

Mainz came out of the international break after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on September 19, a match that, while successful, they were somewhat lucky to win.

Gladbach managed to convert just one of their two penalties and squandered several opportunities during the match, highlighting Mainz’s fragility at the back, as they had already conceded three goals against Eintracht Frankfurt in matchweek two.

Head coach Urs Fischer is likely to face minimal pressure since his team has only faced defeat once in their five matches so far in the 2026-27 season, securing three wins across all competitions.

Die Nullfunfer have managed to score at least four goals in two of their four Bundesliga outings this season, though they have only found the net once in their other two league fixtures.

Fischer’s team has yet to taste victory at home this season, with one draw and one loss, raising concerns for fans given they also dropped their last three home games at Mewa Arena in the previous season, 2025-26.

Leverkusen will be eager to ensure their winning run remains intact after defeating RB Leipzig 2-0 on September 20 before the break.

This win marked their fourth match without defeat and was also their third victory during that stretch, alongside registering their third clean sheet.

Die Werkself have scored at least twice in every one of their six matches across all competitions in the 2026-27 season.

A win for the away team would make it five victories in their last seven encounters with Mainz, and they would extend their unbeaten streak against them to seven matches.

However, head coach Carles Martinez may have concerns about his squad’s record on the road, having failed to claim a win in their two away Bundesliga matches this season, losing 3-2 to Elversberg on August 29 and drawing 2-2 with Augsburg on September 12.

Team News

The primary concern for Mainz regarding player availability lies in their defensive line, as centre-back Dominik Kohr is expected to be sidelined due to an ankle injury until January.

In his absence, Stefan Posch, Fabio Gruber, and Kacper Potulski may have to step up, requiring additional support from midfielders Nadiem Amiri, Kaishu Sano, and Jae-Sung Lee.

Bayer Leverkusen will definitely be without right-back Guela Doue (calf) and midfielder Kennet Eichhorn (metabolic disorder).

Jarell Quansah has frequently filled in on the right side of defense, with established players Aleix Garcia and Ezequiel Fernandez positioned to play in the midfield.

Concerns have also been raised regarding young forward Christian Kofane, which could see veteran Patrik Schick leading the line, supported by attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza.

Mainz 05 probable starting XI:

Schwolow; Posch, Gruber, Potulski; Caci, Amiri, Sano, Lee, Mwene; Becker, Tietz

Bayer Leverkusen probable starting XI:

Spots; Quansah, Tapsoba, Medina, Gutierrez; Garcia, Fernandez; Diaby, Maza, Morreira; Schick

In the upcoming match, Mainz 05 has shown defensive vulnerabilities and may need to count on their offensive capabilities to secure any points this weekend.

While Bayer Leverkusen has an impressive track record against Mainz, the encounter on Saturday is anticipated to be a challenging one.
