Coquimbo xPlatense - prediction, team news, lineups

On Wednesday, Coquimbo Unido and Platense will compete in a historic Copa Libertadores fixture, as one of the teams is set to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time ever at Estadio Francisco Sanchez Rumoroso in Chile.

Last week’s initial leg in Argentina saw the match conclude in a 1-1 draw, setting the stage for an exciting second leg on Wednesday.

Match overview

Coquimbo enjoyed a dramatic finish last week, equalizing in the fifth minute of stoppage time during the second half, which halted a two-match losing streak in this tournament away from home.

Hernan Caputto will be optimistic about his side’s chances of progressing, with the Chilean team remaining unbeaten in their three Copa Libertadores group games at home this year, having won in two of those matches.

At Estadio Francisco Sanchez Rumoroso, they have not suffered a loss in a competitive fixture since March, and their last two Copa Libertadores matches at home saw them win by a total of 5-1.

This month, they have managed to find the net just once in the first half during competitive outings, with their previous two goals coming in second-half stoppage time.

On the defensive end, Coquimbo has limited opponents to just one goal or fewer in 10 straight home matches in all competitions, securing five clean sheets in that sequence.

Historically, the Chilean team has faced Argentine teams at home in the Libertadores on two occasions, suffering a one-goal defeat both times, including a 2-1 loss to Newell’s Old Boys after letting a 1-0 advantage slip in the tournament’s group stage in 1992.

In contrast, Platense has struggled in the closing moments of their recent matches.

Walter Zunino’s squad has allowed goals in the dying minutes of their last two competitive matches after leading, both of which ended in 1-1 draws.

Nevertheless, they could stretch their unbeaten streak to four matches in all competitions on Wednesday, having conceded one goal or fewer in each of those fixtures.

Six of their 10 points in the group stage were picked up away from home, and they have found the net in every away match in the Libertadores this year.

Platense holds a perfect away record in the tournament this season, having scored first in two of those encounters.

Calamares aim to secure their first away win in a knockout fixture since clinching the 2025 Apertura title in the Argentine Primera Division after defeating Huracan 1-0 in the final.

Team News

In Coquimbo’s previous Libertadores group match, they made five adjustments to the starting lineup for the first leg of this tie. Diego Sanchez stepped in for Gonzalo Flores in goal, while Alejandro Camargo joined the midfield to replace Dylan Glaby, who is currently on loan at Palestino in Chile.

Guido Vadala replaced Pablo Rodriguez just beyond the hour mark last week, scoring the equalizer in the final moments of that matchup.

For Platense, Tomas Nasif is unavailable due to a cruciate ligament tear, and Gonzalo Goni is also out as he recovers from an Achilles tendon rupture. Augusto Lotti and Maximiliano Amarfil are both doubtful due to back injuries.

Luciano Gimenez Alanda found the net to put them ahead in the first leg, but Guido Mainero was unable to extend their lead in the second half as Sanchez saved his penalty attempt.

Coquimbo Unido probable starting XI:

Sanchez; Salinas, Gazzolo, Hernandez, Cornejo; Cordero, Galani; Zavala, Vadala, Riveros; Pratto

Platense probable starting XI:

Cozzani; Saborido, Vazquez, Cuesta, Silva; Barrios, Ferreira; Mainero, Gauto, Zapiola; Gimenez

With the stakes so high, both teams are likely to approach this match with caution, but the formidable presence of Sanchez in goal could be pivotal for the home side when it counts.
