Cagliari vs Lazio – News and Probable Lineups

More closely matched in Serie A than one would expect, Cagliari and Lazio are set to face off in Sardinia on Saturday evening.

The home side trails their visitors from the capital by just five points, aiming to secure a victory over the Biancocelesti for the first time in 12 years.

Match overview

Cagliari has been making progress toward safety since the outset of 2026, achieving successive victories against Juventus, Fiorentina, and Hellas Verona that have them on track for their fourth consecutive season in Italy’s top division.

However, that positive streak was interrupted by a recent 2-0 loss to Roma, followed by a disappointing home defeat to Lecce on Monday evening.

With consecutive losses for only the second time this season, Fabio Pisacane’s team faced another 2-0 setback, positioning them closer to the relegation zone.

Still, Cagliari remains four points clear of 17th-placed Lecce and enjoys a seven-point gap to the bottom three, while they could still aspire for a rare finish in the top half.

Narrowing the gap with Lazio could aid in that ambition, yet the Rossoblu have not won in 21 Serie A matches against their Roman adversaries, suffering a 2-0 defeat in November’s reverse fixture.

Regardless of the venue, Lazio’s last league defeat to Cagliari was in May 2013; since then, they have triumphed eight times and managed two draws on Sardinian turf.

Despite their strong historical performance, Lazio visits in the midst of a poor top-flight season that could result in another missed opportunity for European competition for the second consecutive year.

Currently in ninth place with 33 points – just five clear of their hosts – they are nine points short of a potential Conference League qualification spot, following a loss to a direct competitor last week.

Maurizio Sarri’s squad lost 2-0 to Atalanta BC at a barely filled Stadio Olimpico, marking their only one victory in the last seven home games in Serie A.

With a rematch against La Dea on the horizon in the Coppa Italia semi-finals starting early next month – the Biancocelesti’s best chance of salvaging a lackluster season may rely on the cup.

While Sarri’s team has struggled in Rome – likely exacerbated by ongoing fan protests – they have been significantly more effective away from home.

Lazio might possess the joint-lowest away goals tally – with only eight so far – but they also stand out by having conceded the fewest goals (nine), and their last away defeat was in November against AC Milan at San Siro.

Team News

Cagliari continues to miss long-term absentees Andrea Belotti and Mattia Felici, as well as Gennaro Borrelli and Alessandro Deiola, but Michael Folorunsho will make a timely return this weekend.

A product of Lazio’s youth academy, the midfielder’s comeback comes at a crucial time as Gianluca Gaetano has picked up a thigh injury and may be sidelined for about three weeks.

Semih Kilicsoy – the leading scorer for the Rossoblu in Serie A with four goals – is expected to be included in the attacking setup, following a surprising start for veteran striker Leonardo Pavoletti on Monday.

On the other hand, wing-back Marco Palestra – the most fouled player in the league – has contributed to five goals this season and is under consideration for an Italy call-up ahead of the World Cup playoffs.

Lazio can welcome back seasoned defender Alessio Romagnoli, who missed the game against Atalanta due to suspension, yet they still have several significant players unavailable: Pedro, Manuel Lazzari, Mario Gila, and captain Mattia Zaccagni are all out due to injury.

Toma Basic is anticipated to return as well, potentially replacing Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in midfield, should he be fit enough to start.

Up front, Daniel Maldini is likely to operate as a false nine, as Sarri favors the January recruit over Petar Ratkov and Boulaye Dia.

Cagliari probable starting XI:

Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Ze Pedro; Palestra, Adopo, Sulemana, Mazzitelli, Obert; Esposito, Kilicsoy

Lazio probable starting XI:

Provedel; Marusic, Romagnoli, Proxgaard, Tavares; Basic, Cataldi, Taylor; Isaksen, Maldini, Noslin

Both teams are not known for their prolific scoring, which could lead to a low-scoring matchup in Sardinia.

While Lazio seems to be thriving more in their away games than in the nearly empty Olimpico, Cagliari can aim to secure a vital point.
