Santa Clara xFamalicao - prediction, team news, lineups

The upcoming fixture could transform what has been a positive commencement to the 2026-27 Primeira Liga season into an even stronger one, as Santa Clara hosts Famalicao in the Azores for matchday three.

After two matches, the home side has accumulated four points from a possible six, while their opponents from Vila Nova have gained only one point so far.

Match overview

Santa Clara is gradually beginning to resemble a squad eager to rectify the previous season’s disappointing 13th-place finish, a notable fall from the remarkable fifth position achieved during their immediate return to the top division in 2024-25.

While conceding a two-goal advantage in their first match against Nacional and settling for a 2-2 draw was not the ideal scenario for a team aiming for improvement, Petit’s squad compensated for that disappointment with a solid performance in last weekend’s trip to Estadio do Fontelo.

Even though the hosts held only 40% of the possession and made two fewer attempts than their opponents’ ten, the Azoreans clinched a 1-0 win over Academico de Viseu, with Goncalo Paciencia’s penalty in the 14th minute proving to be the difference.

Consequently, Santa Clara currently occupies the seventh position in the Primeira Liga standings, reflecting a satisfactory start to Petit’s first entire season at the helm following his appointment in February, when he succeeded Vasco Matos.

The Azoreans can bolster their early-season European aspirations with another win this weekend, having triumphed in four of their last six home league encounters, including four of the last five in 2025-26, aiming to achieve their first victory at Estadio de Sao Miguel this season.

On the other hand, Famalicao has experienced a shaky start under the seasoned head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who took over in July after the Vila Nova team failed to qualify for Europe following a historic fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season.

After witnessing his team draw on opening day against Estoril Praia, Carvalhal faced his first defeat in charge during a 2-1 home loss to newly promoted Maritimo last weekend, even though Famalicao initially took the lead with a header from Finn van Breemen.

This result also ended Famalicao’s 13-match unbeaten streak in the Primeira Liga, having concluded the previous season without losing any of their final twelve games, but the Vila Nova outfit has not suffered defeat in their last seven league outings on the road (W2, D5).

The visitors on Sunday can take some confidence from that away record as they search for their first win of the season, particularly as they face a Santa Clara side they completed a league double over last season, winning 3-0 at home followed by a 1-0 victory in this very match last January.

Team News

Santa Clara seems to have come through their victory over Academico without any fresh injury concerns, with Matheus Araujo (MT) remaining their only confirmed absentee as he continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury sustained last season.

Paciencia’s penalty last time brought his tally to three goals for the new season, placing him second in the early Golden Boot race behind Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis (who has four), and the 32-year-old forward is expected to look to enhance his total as he leads the attack once more.

It remains uncertain whether Sorisso will play for Famalicao this weekend after he was forced to leave the last match due to injury, so it would not be surprising to see Gil Dias returning to the lineup to operate on the wing.

Dias was one of three players substituted in after half-time by Carvalhal, along with Pedro Santos and Leny Meyer, the latter hoping to make his first complete competitive appearance for the club.

Despite not performing at his best against Maritimo, Georgios Koutsias, who scored on his competitive debut on matchday one, is anticipated to maintain his place in the number nine position.

Santa Clara probable starting XI:

France; Calila, Lima, Pacheco, Romao; Tavares, Borges; Sorriso, Ferreira, Vinicius Lopes; Patience

Famalicao probable starting XI:

Carevic; Pinheiro, Realpe, Van Breemen, Meyer; Van de Looi, De Amorim; Gil Dias, Santos, Aranda; Koutsias

Santa Clara has started the campaign more favorably, and it is anticipated that this will be reflected in Sunday’s encounter against a Famalicao side still in search of their first victory.

Despite the Azoreans losing both encounters last season, they managed a league double over Famalicao in the previous term, indicating that the outcome of this fixture is often determined by the teams’ current form, making a home win the most likely outcome.
