The 29th round of the 2026-27 Brasileiro season will see Internacional face off against Corinthians at Estadio Beira-Rio on Wednesday evening.
Both teams entered the international break following defeats and will be keen to get back to winning ways as they aim to turnaround their lackluster campaigns.
Match overview
Internacional narrowly avoided relegation last season by finishing just one point above the drop zone and were largely expected to struggle again this year. Those concerns have been confirmed as a recent 1-0 loss to Sao Paulo has placed them within the bottom three.
This loss was the tipping point for Paulo Pezzolano, who was let go shortly after, concluding a nine-month stint at the club. Eduardo Baptista has taken over after resigning from his position at Criciuma.
With Internacional only two points from safety as they approach the final ten matches of the season, there remains a chance to escape relegation under Baptista. However, the experienced coach must make a swift impact and cannot afford another failed tenure; he managed just one victory in his last seven matches at Criciuma (D1, L5).
The upcoming fixture will be the sixth clash between these two teams since the start of 2025, with each team having secured two victories in their last five meetings, along with one tie.
On their home turf, where they have not secured a win in five league fixtures since July 23, the hosts will require a strong display to initiate the Baptista era and restore confidence amongst Internacional supporters as they head into the final part of the 2026-27 season.
Similar to their upcoming rivals, Corinthians spent much of the 2025-26 season fighting against relegation, finishing only four points clear of the drop.
Their difficulties this season have come as no surprise, particularly due to the increased pressures of continental football following last season’s Copa do Brasil victory.
Fernando Diniz’s squad was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores in their last match before the international break, and shortly after, they experienced further disappointment with a 3-1 defeat that marked their sixth straight loss in the league.
After a promising beginning under Diniz – remaining unbeaten in their first seven matches (W5, D2) – Time do Povo have seen a significant decline in form and now find themselves in 14th place in the Brasileiro, closer to the relegation spots than the final continental qualification position.
Only the top two clubs, Flamengo and Palmeiras, have conceded fewer goals than Corinthians’ 32. However, their offensive output has been lacking, with a mere 29 goals scored – among the lowest in the league.
With a trip to Palmeiras coming up right after Wednesday’s match, Corinthians will be eager to avoid arriving at Nurbank Parque with anxiety, as a defeat against Internacional could leave them just outside the bottom four on goal difference.
Team News
Victor Gabriel remains suspended for Internacional due to a lengthy ban stemming from a reckless tackle on Gabriel Pec during July’s 2-1 loss to Cruzeiro.
Calebe Goncalves and Kayky are unavailable due to ankle injuries, while Sergio Rochet is dealing with a back issue.
Antonio Sanabria is also on the absentee list for Wednesday’s match after suffering a calf injury while on international duty with Paraguay.
Corinthians’ Andre Carrillo is yet to return after his national team commitments with Peru and is expected to be sidelined.
Zakaria Labyad (anterior cruciate ligament) and Kayke Ferrari will be out for the long haul, though Andre Ramalho is closing in on a return after over two months of recovery.
Internacional probable starting XI:
Wedge; Gomes, Mercado, Juninho; Aguirre, Villagra, Patrick, Maia, Bernabei; Vitinho, Alerrandro
Corinthians probable starting XI:
Souza; Bidu, Henrique, Paulista, Matheuzinho; Bidon, Raniele, Luiz; Garro, Depay, Alberto
Corinthians has not managed to keep a clean sheet in 13 consecutive encounters with Internacional, a trend we expect to continue on Wednesday.
That said, it appears that the visitors might secure a point in what is predicted to be a highly competitive and open match.
