Gil Vicente vs. Braga – News and Probable Lineups

Gil Vicente has an opportunity to surpass Braga in the Primeira Liga standings as the two Minho rivals face off in Barcelos on Saturday evening.

The Roosters, currently fifth, are just two points shy of the fourth-placed Archbishops, setting up a thrilling clash in the quest for a top-four finish.

Match overview

Overall, Gil Vicente is having an impressive Primeira Liga season, despite experiencing a challenging period between November 9, 2025, and January 2, where they failed to win in seven consecutive matches (D6, L1), allowing Braga to take over fourth place.

Nevertheless, the Roosters seem to have regained their form, having won three out of their last four matches (L1), with their only loss during that stretch coming against league leaders Porto. However, Cesar Peixoto’s squad has bounced back robustly.

After a 5–0 demolition of Famalicao, Gil claimed a 2–1 victory over 10-man Moreirense last weekend, with Hector Hernandez’s late goal proving crucial, marking the Galos’s 10th league victory of the season.

This result also extended the Roosters’s unbeaten streak against other Minho teams to six matches this season (W4), including a 1–0 win in the previous encounter with Braga, which was their first victory in the last seven meetings between the teams (D2, L4).

A win on Saturday would enable Gil to achieve their first-ever league double over Braga and reclaim fourth place, and the Galos can take heart from their home performance, having won six out of their 10 Primeira Liga games in Barcelos this term (D2, L2), including victories in both of the last two.

Conversely, Braga comes in with tremendous momentum, having secured maximum points in their last four Primeira Liga fixtures, scoring 13 goals while not conceding, including a 3–0 win against Rio Ave last weekend.

A rapid start saw Carlos Vicens’s team take an early lead with a goal from Florian Grillitsch, followed by a second-half double from Ricardo Horta that sealed the match, leaving the Archbishops unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions (W5, D1).

So far, Braga has won 11 out of their 21 league matches this season (D6, L4), scoring a total of 44 goals, which is the joint-second highest total in the league, while only four teams have conceded fewer than their 18 goals.

In their efforts to consolidate fourth place, the Archbishops can also be buoyed by their away record, having secured victories in their last two Primeira Liga away matches and five out of 11 overall on the road this season (D4, L2).

Team News

Gil Vicente enters Saturday’s match with almost a full squad, although right-back Jonathan Mutombo is a doubt after missing the last four games.

Midfielder Mohamed Bamba is also uncertain due to his absence from the last two matchday squads, while winger Sergio Bermejo may miss a second consecutive match.

Hernandez, who scored the winner off the bench during his debut, could be in line for a start up front, which may result in Carlos Eduardo being dropped.

For Braga, the front three is expected to remain unchanged, with Pau Victor leading the attack while Rodrigo Zalazar and Horta play on the wings.

Amine El Ouazzani continues to be unavailable due to a foot injury, center-back Sikou Niakate will miss a fifth consecutive match, and Vitor Carvalho and Gorby are also likely to remain sidelined due to injury.

Gil Vicente probable starting XI:

Lucao; Ze Charles, J Night, Light, Conan; Caseres, Esteves; Souza, Garcia, Toure; Hernandez

Braga probable starting XI:

Hornicek; Barisic, Lagerbielke, Arrey-Mbi; Gomez, Moutinho, Grillitsch, Martinez; Zalazar, P Victor, Horta

This fixture is challenging to predict considering both teams’ recent strong performances, and given the stakes in the race for the top four, a cautious approach may prevail.

Thus, a close contest with both sides potentially neutralizing each other’s strengths appears to be the most likely outcome.
