Following a disappointing end to last season, Juventus will be looking to make a statement when they kick off their Serie A campaign with a visit to recently promoted Frosinone on Sunday.
While Juventus aims to recover from their failure to secure a top four finish last May, their hosts are focused on staying in the league.
Match overview
After earning only five points from their final five matches of the 2025-26 season, Juventus narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.
A draw with local rivals Torino during the final week meant the Bianconeri let a valuable top-four spot slip, forcing them to settle for a Europa League position.
Despite this, interim coach Luciano Spalletti managed to keep his job, and his side performed well in pre-season.
After a goalless encounter with Basel, Juventus secured victories over both Standard Liege and Nice, before defeating Chelsea and Palermo, with the exception of a loss to their rivals Inter de Milão.
The Turin outfit has also been active in reshaping Spalletti’s squad while balancing their financials: key player Dusan Vlahovic has left, while Kerim Alajbegovic has joined the club as an exciting new addition.
Now, they will attempt to maintain a successful streak on Serie A opening weekends, having won 13 of their last 15 league openers and recorded clean sheets in six out of the last seven.
In contrast, Frosinone have yet to secure a point in their initial top-flight encounters this season, dropping all three of their matches thus far.
Moreover, the Canarini have historically struggled against Juventus in Serie A, losing five out of six previous meetings and conceding at least two goals in every encounter.
After returning to Italy’s top division for a second time last season, Frosinone ended just a point behind Serie B champions Venezia, having finished in 15th place a year prior.
Head coach Massimiliano Alvini guided his team to 12 victories in 19 home fixtures, with his squad notably achieving the highest number of set-piece goals, totaling 29, including 14 from corners.
After their last promotion in 2023 resulted in immediate relegation, they are determined to avoid a repeat of that fate, with Austrian internationals Florian Grillitsch and Romano Schmid leading an influx of new signings.
Following a defeat to regional rivals Lazio at the end of pre-season, the Giallazzurri advanced to the second round of the Coppa Italia, triumphing 4-1 over Juve Stabia to book a match against Sassuolo.
Team News
Juventus will be without Vlahovic, who has departed after his contract expired, so the fit-again Arkadiusz Milik, Jonathan David, and Randal Kolo Muani are likely to compete to spearhead the Bianconeri’s attack.
To strengthen his attacking options, Spalletti re-signed Kolo Muani and brought in Bosnian talent Alajbegovic, following the unexpected acquisition of right-back Zeki Celik from Roma.
Jeff Ekhator was also recruited from Genoa; however, the Italy international is dealing with a thigh injury and is anticipated to miss this weekend’s fixture, alongside Federico Gatti who is also doubtful.
Given that Juventus conceded from the first shot on target from their opponents in nearly half of their league matches last season, Guglielmo Vicario is set to take over from Michele Di Gregorio as the starting goalkeeper.
While Kenan Yildiz was the top scorer for Juventus with 10 goals in Serie A, Frosinone’s Fares Ghedjemis found the back of the net 15 times in the second tier, and midfielder Giacomo Calo recorded a league-high 25 goal involvements.
Facing a potential fight for survival, the hosts have signed Schmid, Patrizio Masini, and additional players who may feature on Sunday.
In the previous week’s cup tie, Alvini was without new signings Grillitsch and Terzic – in which Giorgi Kvernadze scored twice and assisted another – but Seydou Fini is expected to return after serving a suspension.
Frosinone probable starting XI:
Palmisani; Oyono, Calvani, Monterisi, Bracaglia; Masini, Calo; Ghedjemis, Schmid, Kvernadze; Raymond
Juventus probable starting XI:
Vicarious; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Luiz; Conceição, McKennie, Yildiz; Kolo Muani
Since Spalletti’s arrival last autumn, Juventus has noticeably improved, although they squandered crucial points in the closing stages of the season.
Nevertheless, with the Bianconeri remaining unbeaten in 19 of their last 20 matches against teams promoted from lower divisions, they will be aiming to avoid any slip-ups on Sunday.
