Fluminense xCoritiba - prediction, team news, lineups

The quest for continental qualification during the 2026 Brasileiro campaign takes center stage on Friday morning as Fluminense hosts Coritiba at Estadio do Maracana in round 29.

The previous encounter between the two teams in April ended in a 1-1 draw, marking their initial matchup in two and a half years.

Match overview

Following a lackluster stretch where they went seven matches without a win from July 18 to August 11, Fluminense decided to part ways with Luis Zubeldia, concluding his 11-month period as head coach. Opting for long-time assistant manager Marcao has proven to be a sagacious move since then.

Marcao kicked off his reign with an exhilarating 3-2 win over Palmeiras, courtesy of late goals from Kevin Serna and Germano Cano. This victory triggered a resurgence, with Fluminense winning six out of their last nine games across all tournaments (D1, L2), most recently overcoming Corinthians 3-1.

Consequently, Po de Arroz has ascended to fourth place in the Brasileiro standings and secured a spot in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals, where they are set to meet Palmeiras later this month, vying for a place in the final on November 28.

However, Fluminense’s current focus is on securing maximum points against Coritiba, and their home performance in this fixture has been impressive, remaining unbeaten in 10 consecutive matches (W6, D4) since October 2011.

While a title challenge seems unlikely due to a current 12-point gap behind Flamengo, whom they will face next, Fluminense has a real chance to surpass Athletico Paranaense into third place, which would represent their best league finish since 2022.

Coritiba, returning to the top flight after a two-year hiatus as a result of their Serie B championship in 2025, has adapted relatively well to the Brasileiro, although they entered the international break in a precarious situation.

Fernando Seabra’s squad suffered a 5-0 defeat against Vasco da Gama in their last match, marking their worst loss of the season and their second defeat in three matches, with a 3-3 draw against Athletico in between.

Prior to this setback, Os Glorioso had a four-game unbeaten streak, earning 10 points from a possible 12 and momentarily finding themselves in contention for the Copa Libertadores. That said, Coritiba has now fallen to ninth place in the standings and is likely to fight for a Copa Sudamericana spot at best.

They must rectify their defensive deficiencies, having not kept a single clean sheet in their last eight games across all competitions, conceding 43 goals in the league— the highest among the top 11 teams.

Facing a team with the second-best home record in the league presents a significant challenge, especially for a Coritiba side that has managed only one win from their last five away games, having conceded five goals in their most recent outing, highlighting the difficulty of the task ahead.

Team News

Nonato and Agustin Cannobio are serving suspensions, with Cannobio’s absence enabling Yeferson Soteldo to rejoin the Fluminense starting XI after being sidelined against Corinthians.

John Kennedy and Matheus Reis continue to recover from knee injuries, while Alisson (hip) and Germano Cano (hamstring) are also out of the lineup.

Twenty-nine-year-old defender Ignacio has been unavailable for his team’s last four matches but is nearing a return to the pitch.

Former Fluminense player Keno will miss the opportunity to face his old club as he remains out with a knee injury, alongside Lucas Ronier.

Brian Ocampo (ankle) has not played since early August and is unlikely to be fit in time for the clash on Friday.

Jacy and Tinga, both from Brasil, round off the visitors’ injury list, with Jacy set to miss a second straight game following 11 consecutive starts.

Fluminense probable starting XI:

Fabius; Xavier, Silva, Diaz, Rene; Hercules, Martinelli; Serna, Acosta, Soteldo; Hulk

Coritiba probable starting XI:

Moorish; Melo, Moledo, Coser, Tissi; Gomez, Santos; Lopes, Josue, Lavega; Rocha

Heading into this matchup, Fluminense is favored and is expected to take charge of the proceedings.

Marcao’s men have triumphed in 10 out of their 14 home league encounters this season, hence we anticipate them achieving a convincing win.
